Just purchased this emblem from an Ebay auction in Australla. Looked up the Butler book on the 1929 Essex but since I purchased this I have found that this emblem, only used in 1929, came in different collors. I expect that it was used in the United States but do not know. Anyone know any more about this grill emblem?

I believe what you have there is something that a dealership in Australia made for his cars. The '28 Icarus hood emblem drawing layed over a stock/factory grill shell badge then reglazed. They can do the glazing any color, or combination of colors. That squiggly round signature on the bottom is the name of the dealership, or the guy who owned the dealership.

Produced by Dalgety and Co, Australian agents for Hudson/Essex. Quite rare, and not quite accurate, as the flying man symbol and radiator cap was only used on 1928 models, whereas this is a "Challenger" badge, which was 1929. Also the flying man pictured is the one used on Hudson only, as the Essex one started from the torso, not the feet. But in Oz, anything goes!

Thanks Geoff, That is good information. It will look right at home on my 28 roadster pickup.
