7X or Clifford head?

Nah,racers would never try to pass this off as a factory part...
Nor would they ever claim that Hudson produced 'lots' of 308 powered Jets...
Sorry, but my BS meter is pegged...
Nice job of removing the Clifford script though.
A bit pricey considering afaik Clifford still has these available new for about half that price.0 -
I have a question about your georgeous gold engine;
the intake manifold;
is it a 1-pc or 2-pc intake, and who made it/them, perhaps Hudson or ?
If you have a side view, horizontal angle photo that would be good to see. thanks a lot0 -
The intake is the factory iron piece from 55-6 with no modifications. However, with the taller
Clifford head raising the air cleaner mounting points I've raised the carbs also with some phenolic spacers available from dashman.net/product.html?id=92 in 1/4" and 1/2" thickness.
This was mostly to level the air cleaners with the top of the engine with the bonus of helping
keep the fuel from boiling out of the carbs.0 -
Apologies, when I looked at the Ebay ad this morning could have sworn it was $1795
(possible that the coffee hadn't kicked in yet). That is an interesting intake pictured in the ad
now and one that I've never seen before. (I'm positive that pic wasn't there this morning).
Personally,I have no idea of Hudson parts available from Clifford now but it seems to me
members here have purchased headers within the last couple of years. Dunno, maybe it was
longer ago.0 -
Awesome looking engine, TwinH! Called and left you a message.

Thanks Russell,I will definitely touch base tomorrow.
I am also intrigued with the intake shown in the auction. Could this be a regular Twin-H
manifold with the heat riser stove ground off? A lot of work to be sure, but not out of the
realm of a hardcore drag racer looking to lose some weight off the front of his car. Pretty neat!0 -
FYI
Twin H Manifold has excellent almost equal Runners to the Cyls. I modified a Twin H similar to what Sloane McCauley did back in the day as pictured now on Ebay, but installed 2 huge Pontiac V8 2bbl Carbs. I believe Sloane had a tube connecting each half for 'balance' too. Sloane was running Stock Class and a National Record Holder so had to retain Single Carbs. In talking with an Old Drag Racer 'Ike Smith' a few Yrs ago, he said the Jet Owners had Sanctioning Race Association's believing Hudson had made a Hornet Powered Jet awhile until some New Car Dealers protested because their 'sponsored' New Cars were being beat by an obsolete Brand that was out of business...Incidently, I have some very interesting correspondence from Ike Smith before he passed that I should share sometime....
My dual 2BBL Set - Up runs great and not over carburated since the motor is modified.0 -
Great looking intake. I'll bet there's a fair amount of time fabbing yours up too.
Love the racing stories,I want to say AHRA and NHRA didn't catch up with said
skullduggery till the mid 60's but I'm not positive. I can only guess that Hudson
and particularly Vince Piggins were well versed in creating paper trails to support
their backdoor racing programs through their involvement with Nascar. Vince
would later go on to be a major player in bringing out the Z-28 for Chevrolet.0 -
Twin H
You have a great looking Hornet Motor and I like the neat Oil Pump Update with nice formed Lines.
I understand Vince Piggins when a young Engineer at Hudson traveled to many Stock Car Races and was the person behind the 'Severe Useage' Program. Naturally when Hudson & Nash merged eliminating racing, Chevy wanted Vince to help make their new little V8 win Races, then came the Power Pack, and HD Parts Program (Severe Use for racing)...0 -
Nice engine TwinH, picked up on your full-flow oil pump mod awhile back. Plan to do something similar, but with a new cover plate instead of modifying the body.0

Would love to hear any and all you have on Ike Smith. It would make a great story for the WTN or the Historical Society. My engine and tranny on my 54 is an Ike Smith product so I have a bit of intrest in the man. Not much about him around today.0

Brownie,
You may be right on sharing Drag Race History from Ike Smith. He was behind several top Racers back then including Jack Clifford I have probably a dozen emails from Ike with things he did with news clippings, pictures, etc. communicating right up to the end. In fact Ike's widow mailed me a card stating Ike was gone... I dont think the emails would Post well but ill print then review to summerize...However, perhaps I should send to someone in the HET Club to compose and puplish a Story in the White Triangle....0 -
Ol Racer-
I think that's a grand idea. Besides, Sam is always on the lookout for new material.0 -
Do any of you guys know of an after market carb swap for a Twin H,54 308? I am having issues with the WA-1 #2113s carbs as the power system appears to have had corrosion in it and is making the pistons stick causing a bog ,stumbling,on exceleration from a stop around 30 mph after a hard run on the freeway ???? I am fearing that my old carbs are not going to hold up due to the damage to the piston casing on the power system. I might have issues with the excelerator pump but it misses differant from what would happen if they were bad. I need some one to direct me in the right direction on this . The engine never stalls and the idol circuit is just fine?0

Daytona Parts has a fully adjustable universal 1-barrel carb for sale. But I would think you would be able to find some good WA-1's from someone here.

I think I would make sure you dont have a fuel supply issue first . It would be sad to put new carbs on and still have the same problem . And as far as the carbs go those are completely rebuildable .Walt does excellent work on his rebuilt units and the look like new ,

Great looking engine, curious as to what the fuel pump originally fit?
