Have you tried going thru your state registry office? Here in Maine you simply show proof of ownership and fill out a form requesting a title. It cost $50 here in Maine.
Maine doesn't require a title for anything over a certain age, but you can get a title for an older car. If I were to sell a, say, 1950 Hudson to someone in a title state, like Massachusetts, for example, I can get a title from the state as above.

It depends on which state you are in. In some states it is easy and some are impossible. So which state do you live in? Someone in your state may have experience with this. If you live in Kentucky, you are SOL!...maybe.

The company named above is well known here and the KY DMV will not accept their paperwork. All the paperwork you need can be obtained honestly and legally for free.
Good Luck

My intention here is to assist the fellow in getting a title for his car. My "advice" is to talk with your state's DMV and let them "advise" you as to what you need to do.
If you live in KY, it is possible to get a title for a untitled car under very specific conditions. These things actually happened to me.
Example 1: Ohio car with no title; there is NO WAY to get a title. A painful, expensive experience.
Example 2: 2 Minnesota cars with no titles (at 2 different times) with a letter from MN DMV stating MN title rules and official afidavit from the seller and a letter explaining why he didn't have the title, 2 titles. Yeah!!
Example 3: A Kentucky car from before the time titles were issued with signed and notarized tranfer paperwork and bill of sale. I got the title.
Example 4: An Alabama car with a bill of sale and AL registration. I got the title!
Example 5: Two different untitled KY trucks (at different times) the DMV took the VIN and gave me the name of the last titleholders. The previous owners were nice enough to help me get replacement titles and then transfer them to me. How's that for nice people?
I guess I can't complain too much. I got burned once but now I check with the DMV every time I consider buying a car.
Have a nice day

No offense taken. It is amazing how nice some of the people are that I've come across while pursuing a title. I also have good fortune with some folks at my local KY DMV who will actually take time to help me out. I am also amazed by the total lack of assistance I received from the DMV folks north of the river. As I said, a painful and costly learning experience.
Have a nice day
