39 Hudson Questions

I have a 39 Hudson , 91 series, 2 door sedan. I took the fuel pump off today. I am preparing to try starting the vehicle after it setting idle for many years. The pump that was on the car was a HYGRADE 397. It was installed with a spacer of fuel pump gaskets about .25 inch thick.?? What is the A.C. fuel pump number for this car. They seem to be more plentiful. The gas tank had at least a gallon of dirt and rocks in it. The filler neck was probably to tempting for a youngster sometime in the past. I think I have it clean, but time will tell.

Also , this car has small "frog eye" tail lights positioned high on the sloping back, about even with the top of the trunk lid. Other 39's I have seen pictured have lights mounted in the rear fenders. Any information? The old car has 59,000

miles and is remarkably original, or seems to be.

The pans that had to be removed to get to the fuel pump were indeed a challenge.

Thanks for any help.

David

Someone else will have to answer the fuel pump number question. The taillights on that model were carryovers from the '38 Terraplanes. The bigger Hudsons of '39 had the fender mounted lights. Is this the car from north of Athens, GA?

Regarding the fuel pump, you can get a recently-rebuilt one from Dave Kostansek, who advertises in the WTN (I'm assuming you're in the Hudson club!). Don't try to find a new old stock one that may have been sitting on the shelf for 40 years, the gaskets will be dried out and won't be of the type to handle today's gasolines. Dave uses new-style gasket material.
  • David, The fuel pump types that AC supplied Hudson with in those years were designated as 'AK,AF, or possibly AB' Hudson gives the part number as 158664 for the years 39-42. In their interchange book however, they indicate to "use 166218 for interchange ' meaning that as a dealer you would have used a later model pump for the application. That pump is for the 46-7 6 cyl engines. The GM number corresponding to that part number from Hudson could be one of several. Here they are: GM #1523629,1523867 or 5594091. Sounds like you might want to bring the old one along and see how well the GM ones match up. Good luck.
  • Thanks for the responses. I am glad to know about the tail lights. I plan to try to start the engine tomorrow. Wish me luck. The fuel pump information was very helpful. The one I have was working on the bench today. Tomorrow??

This car has spent all its life in Canyon, TX.

    Thanks,

    David

Be careful in starting a car that hasn't run in that long. The oil may have congealed in the engine and the sump. I know you probably don't want to do this but...it might not be a bad idea to drop the oil pan and clean it out. Also, get up with a rag and kerosene and clean off some of the crud up inside the engine block. Refill the upper tray (where the rod dippers get their oil) with new oil before replacing. New gaskets are available. You also need to replace the neoprene o-ring before replacing the oil pan, that's back near the pickup tube.
