Stepdown wheel cylinder interchange info

I just bought a pair of rear brake cylinders for my '49 from Advanced Discount Auto parts. $10.99 each. They are listed for 1980 AMC Concord. PNs W59240 left W59241 Right. They are identical to the originals. This may not be new information, but it does verify that the interchange is valid.

Comments

  • SDave - They are not identical to the origionals. But they work fine. The origionals had an adaptor fitting that screwed into the cylinder and the steel brake line screwed into the adaptor fitting. On these cylinders the steel line screws directly into the cylinder. Norm

Thanks for posting the additional numbers. There are a lot of "Newbies" out there that need to start their own interchange data. A "one stop" source like the old Backus Interchange manual would be nice. I have one of those. Not much help any more
I stand corrected. They are not identical.. poor choice of words. I should have said " they measure out to be the same and work just fine. Maybe if you are using the original brake lines, you might have to do a little tweaking. I installed all new lines.
This car was wrecked back in 1972 and not driven since. I think it was a low mileage car due to th condition of the front suspension, steering gear and brake drums that appear to have not been turned. I guess that is why the parts were cannibalized. It had been stripped of engine and driveline. No brake or clutch linkage. Radiator and sway bar missing .All the interior was gone including the instruments. Glass missing or broken except the back Herculite window.! I just couldn't see a Brougham crushed. A very basic car. No heater, no radio, no OD. But had a deluxe steering wheel! Well just the bare steel.
I wish we did have a NAPA store near by. We had two, they went out of business years ago then a couple more tried to survive over the years, They have all folded.. probably due to the discounting chain store competition. One in Titusville FL. has a machine shop attached . It's over 40 miles from here, but they do all my machine work. I hope they last as long as I do. LOL

It is a good thing to get this information out. I have proposed but apparently WTN did not like the idea to have archive technical items that would help newbies with their projects. There are still articles I go back to in WTN to answer questions I have. Many of the authors of these articles are long gone and the WTN archive is the only place you can find them. Helping new comers is a great thing to keep the mark alive. If they think it is hopeless they will walk on by.

Does anyone have a good number for the seal that goes in the front hub to protect the inner bearing? The number I have is no good.

    Thanks for posting, Uncle Josh!
  • Uncle J - The front brk. hoses for '36 to '47 (Hudsons) are not the same. The '36 to '39 are secured to the bracket with a large hex nut. The '40 to '47 use a U clip. faustmb - The front wheel seal # - CR 15649. Norm

OK, I stand corrected. Rockauto lists hoses for 41-47 and 48-54 front, rear and center. To list them here would be redundant.

BTW, Herm, or somebody, do you have good numbers for 36-40 hoses? Rockauto only lists what the manufacturer tells them parts fit.

The hose for front of the '41 should also fit '40
