49 Hudson Windshield Installation Question
I am looking for is some feedback on how other members have installed their new windshields. I have new glass and K-Gap rubber...... I did not think it was necessary to use any sealants, but from what I remember, other members have used either urethane or clear silicone to seal it up. If that is the case, exactly where are you placing the bead of material? I assume it is placed on the inside of the frame where the rubber pushes up against it....
Am I correct? Any thoughts?
I really want to get this in tomorrow. Please advise.

I have a '37 so am not sure how the 1949 windshield is constructed, but I would apply the sealant on the OUTSIDE side of the mounting flange. I'd wait until the glass and gasket are on. Then I'd go around the gasket on the outside, prying up the side farthest from the glass, and squirting a continuous bead of sealant under the rubber, all the way around. Actually, I went back and squirted it in under the part that grabs the glass itself, as well. But I was doing this as a sort of retro-seal, after maybe 30 years, to prevent leakage, and with old rubber. I used 3M Window Weld Super-Fast Urethane (black)0

Call a glass shop or an auto body supply place and ask if they can give you a part number or better yet sell you windshield sealer for roped in windows that doesn't fully harden.
The original sealer was called "dolphinite" and was mostly likely similar in characteristics of the quarter panel to body sealer in that it doesn't harden.0 -
Dennis, did you get your new glass from the guy in Oregon, off Ebay? If so, keep me informed as to how everything goes. I won't be to that point till late Sping, so you can be the "guinnea pig". Take pictures of any "quirks", if you can.0

It ain't that complicated. Get a tube of 'Sealsall' from the hardware store for your calking gun. The stuff goes on white and dries transluscent. (like almost clear) Put it on the inside of the window frame. When it squeezes out, wipe it off before it dries. You have several hours of working time.
The KGap rubber will have to be cut on the bench while wrapped around the glass, so you have a straight piece in the center meeting the long piece at a 45 deg angle. Seal with the same stuff. I also put a small bead where the rubber meets the glass after the windshield was in.
Block the windshields up with smalll wooden wedges under the bottom like the book says until you get the spring clips screwed into place, and the stuff is cured.
The stuff is so good, I also cut the lip off the rear window rubber that held the stainless Commadore strip, because it was old enough that the string method didn't work, and potted the stainless around the window. Worked great, looks original, and hasn't come off after several thousand miles at turnpike speeds buffetted by semis.0 -
Uncle Josh - Thanks for the detailed and very helpful post. Will do it the way you suggested.
Wkithens - Yes, got the glass from the guy in Orgegon. Finishing up my new site this week and wiill have pics on there. It looks very good, but I am very dissappointed in how long it took to get. I ordered it before Christmas and just got it this past week. The flat glass has yet to arrive, but I am not ready for that right now so I cam not too worried. The guy could not be nicer, and from what I understand he got backed up with holiday orders. Just a heads up......order well in advance of when you need to install.0
