An older member of our chapter took a '47 brougham (2-door sedan) and spliced the rear end of a derelict Hudson pickup cab onto it (keeping the passenger car chassis as I recall). He then shortened the bed from the derelict pickup and mounted it to the chassis. Only problem was that the passenger car's doors flared out at the bottom, while the true pickup doors would have continued down without the flare (they were actually 1941 passenger car doors). The effect was interesting. Being as the brougham had longer front doors than the normal pickup cab, that provided for a 'natural' stretch, and Ed had all kinds of room to move his seat back, PLUS store the spare tire behind the seat. He's gone now, sadly, and the vehicle was sold to a teenaged boy who (unfortunately) hasn't done anything with the truck.

Actually, Ed's truck was made from a coupe. THat is why he had to move the wheel wells in the box to accomadate the normal wheelbase. He did not shorten the box rather he extended the back of the frame to keep the box full lenth.

I visited Glen Johnson in Brigham City, Utah about 10 years ago and he was going to do one by using coupe doors, and a second "donor" parts pickup for the rear half of the cab- cut it enough longer to provide the extra length, so the two could be joined at one seam and avoid having to make pieces to fill in. Don't know if he ever did it.

  • Bill. How did you get a York Newspaper? I saw it in the newspaper and I hate to say it looks dumb with the little windows. I have not seen any stretched truck cabs that ever looked right.

Nice that the owner thoughtfully stood in front of the unique feature of the rig, completely blocking the view. . .
  • You don't wanna see, 2 small opera windows, looks dumb.
