308 rear main sealing involving wood & packing (string) and/or use of Dodge 318 2-pc neoprene seals

Asking for guidance please:

I have a Best (brand) full gasket set, Hudson 308.

I suspect maybe lost instructions; may be it did not have specific instructions on how to correctly seal a Hudson rear main, like Hudson did at the factory.

Here's thanking you in advance, on where the wooden pcs go, the string goes; is any black hi-temp RTV necessary ???

and, all other pertinent details.

=> I'd prefer to use the Dodge 318 neoprene 2-pc seal, considered by some as the ultimate seal.

This info may be some where on this site and a link (URL) will explain the proper procedures and options.

  • ME TOO THEY ARE EASY TO DO JUST TRIM OFF THE EARS THAT ARE ON THE SEALE AND CHEAP THE NEW ON DALE COOPER SELLS IS IN THE $35 RANGE NAPA HAS THE MOPAR ONE FOR AROUND $10
  • I have a great idea; maybe someone will make a video of properly installing the rear main seal using state-of-the-art techniques/materials, including the Dodge 318 2-pc neoprene seal and upload it onto YouTube.
  • m6ride, that's a great idea, I'd like to see that too. I'm in the process of rebuilding the 308 out of the 53 Hornet. Richie.
  • I suspect I am in for a rude awakening as I have been stockpiling sticks, twigs, twine and feathers in an effort to corner the market - now you tell me this is for naught ? Gert Kristiansen

I put a dab of Black RTV where I trimed off the Mopar Seal Ears then pack the String & Wood into grooves using a punch. I try to get most of the String into the caps but there's usually more material then will fit. I use some more Black RTV too. .

The info listed below as apparently the correct rear seals for the 318/5.2L engine, plus the correct ones for interchange to Hudson 232/262/308, thereby replacing the graphite-impregnated black rope seal .
