Grille ornament

I'd like to "spruce up" the grill ornament on my 53 Hornet. The red color is very faded. Has anyone take one apart and painted the colored portions? If so, how do you do it? Is there a way to get inside the plastic or do you paint it on the outside of the plastic. Is this a feasible thing to do?
Thanks,
Ed

Prior to K-GAP making the first reproduction in 1980, I and others would spend hours with tiny dental pics and bits of VERY fine sandpaper cleaning the old paint from the inside of the medallion. The alum. silver has to go into the "chrome" areas first and then the red paint all from the craft store. You'll never get the chrome as shiny as factory vacuum plating nor the candy red as brilliant as the factory placed coating. With your paints you won't need the gray backing that was sprayed over all to keep it in place. I found that daubing whole milk on the white triangle multiple times gave the best translucence for the light behind it.
If you've got nothing but time on your hands and a steady hand to boot, you can create something that at best will look half as good as the currently available reproduction which is worth every penny of its price.0 -

Ed,
You'll never get out all the scratches you most likely have on the front surface of the grill ornament not to mention all the intricate paintwork you'll be facing as metioned by "StillOutThere".
Go with a new one by Gene Eshelman. I replaced the one on my '53 Super Wasp this year (2013) and it looks like it should, brand new. Also, thanks PAULARGETYPE, for the link to Gene Eshelman's website! I found on it three things I can use on my '53 Super Wasp.
