1954 Hudson Hornet Special

My painter said the fender has never been changed but we all know how painters are, They are a unique breed but like I said Lance said it was possible so I am just going to leave it that way. As for the paint it is done now and looks pretty cool actually.0

O just went on Auto Color Library.com. Didn't see a lipstick anywhere. This time I went 1955 Hudson instead of Nash and the Coral Red came up.0
-
I have never seen a published color swatch of Hudson's Lipstic, or Green Gold - the two new colors that were added sometime after the first of 1954, so it is understandable that any web page devoted to auto colors would not show such a color. Go to [http://home.comcast.net/~sarahdyoung/hudsonjetpaint.html] to see the color line up for all 1953 and 1954 Hudson autos - again, Lipstic & Green Gold are only referenced, not shown here either.0

@Arkie, ''quote''the problem with factory color identifiers for '54 was that the color code was "inked" onto the i.d. plate. Over the years, this ink fades to the point of being only barely readable and in some cases, not at all legible. ''quote''
Thanks for the info. My 54 color was easy to be identified as Silver Blue and I was wandering why there was no info on the i.d. plate. Now I know. So, if I would like to print something on the plate, what should appear? The code? J-159 or 11069? Thanks again, Michel.0 -
Be very careful when making assumptions about Hudsons. There were no blanket rules for Hudson. You may say 'as a rule' but to say that something was NEVER done invites exceptions to show up. Gus Sousa once told me that when he worked at a dealership near Chicago that he saw hydraulic window mechanisms on sedans installed per the customer's order. This would not appear in Hudson's list of options for sedans yet the dealership did just that. He also told me of an elderly couple who in 1950, wanted to trade their older pre war Hudson on a new model but didn't like the choices of colors available. They wanted a pre war color. The dealership got in touch with the factory, found out they still had that color available and voila, a factory painted non standard color car was produced. Hudson as a small manufacturer had to make sales any way they could. Is it really hard to imagine that this same scenario playing out in 1954 when someone prefered an AMC color over a standard Hudson color? Especially when there is no evidence that there was ever any other color on the car.0

I agree ,have been told many times by those old enough to know Hudson would do what it took to get a customer what he wanted ( and would pay for).

I've never seen a Lipstick chip. Very cool. Both of my 54 club coupes were Lipstick. Has anyone come up with a modern base/clear formula to match?0
-
Chris, I found a small (touch-up) can of Lipstick and mixed it up and painted an old license plate. I took it down to my local shop (keep in mind that the original color was a lead based paint and todays matches are not lead based) and we did a match then did a search for colors close to the original match. I did a license plate with the computer match formula and one with the "close to original match." Asked a few "old Hudson shop painters" what they thought and was told the original formula was too dark and the "close to original match" was what the original "not affected by the sun" color was like. Therefore, Since I trust these folks comments, I will be using the "close to original match" (2012 Ford K2-Torch Red) for my car. And, if I painted it today it most likely would have black on the roof and black on the section below the long polished mid bright work-from tire to tire? However, when all is said and done, I may change my mind.0

A member in the NW chapter has 3 '54 convertibles, one in each of the red colors that were available that year. We had a meet at his house a few years ago, and he had the three lined up, on the lawn. There was not that much difference between the colors, and I think anyone would have had a tough time identifying the color on one of the cars standing alone.0

Not wanting to dig up bones, but, today I started to refinish interior parts. As I separated the aluminum door base covers I noticed that the two metal parts under the door base were missing. Made a call to a friend, and what do you know, he had a set. I was looking at his 53 while I was in his shop and noticed that his base covers have the Hudson name on them. Mine do not. They even have a bit of a different pattern stamped in the metal. Mine are a good fit so it brings up the question as to when did they stop putting the Hudson name on the door base covers? Is this something with 54's or late production Hudson Hornet Specials? What about the 55/56's that follow?0
-
My 54 Special door sill plates had no name. I was told this was because they were Wasp door sill plates that had no name on them. My Hornet Special had a lot or Wasp parts on it. Maybe the 7D Hornet of that year had the Hudson name ???? I had a set made by the guy that does the sills. I had to send the ones off the car for him to reproduce.Very expensive. I know the 53s have the Hudson name, and I love them. Very classy !! The ones on my 6D are kind of diamond pattern. Being new they are very nice as well. I wanted to stay true to the Special. They sure threw a lot of crazy stuff at them on the way out the door.0
-
My sill plates are shot but original. They do not say Hudson on them. My chrome guy gave me the name of a guy here in CA that might be able to make me another set but wont be able to do it until end of January. Do you mind sharing who did yours and how much?0
-
Try this guy in New Jersey for hand made sills. Don Kuehn 973-423-1196 Dany Spring had a pair of 54 sills a few years ago made by (I think this guy) and they looked just like original Hudson. They were about $250.00 a pair and be prepared to wait as they are made to order.0

I'm pretty sure that the junior cars had the embossed triangles without the "HUDSON" script, and the senior cars had the embossed triangles with the "HUDSON" script. The exception was the Hornet Specials, which had the junior car treatments.
Pictured is the reproduction sills that Dellis Hudson made (who advertised in the WTN forever). I think he still makes them. The detail is not embossed, however, it is simply printed on the flat surface. Otherwise, it is a fine reproduction.0 -
Brownie, the sill plates in the car are factory equipment for that car. Wayne0
-
Thanks Wayne. I expected that they were (they are in too good of condition not to be.) but just wondered when they dropped the Hudson name on them. By the way, I'll have to go out and take a photo of them in the morning because the fact that they do not have the diamonds on them just might get another discussion going?0
-
These are the sill plates that are (were) in my 54 Hornet Special and as has been mentioned I expect that this is also the plates you would find in the 54 Wasp? Anyway, they were an easy repair and are now ready to go. Note: no Hudson diamond....0
-
The sill plates on my 7D coupe are similar, however, there is a Hudson crest embossed into the center of the flat surface similar in design to the crest in the center of the hub caps.0

Years ago, I bought one of the last '54 Hudson's built. Strange car, it was a Hornet, no radio, no heater, twin H , 3spd, tinted glass, power steering and brakes. and a very plain interior. Needless to say, it had problems and was not reliable so I sold it. In the paint chips, I did not see a "salmon color for '54. I had a beautiful one owner '54 Hornet sedan at one time and it was a salmon and off white colors, grey interior, and a BW trans that went bad and the tranny shop refused to repair it, said there were no parts available. So that car was sold. Wish I still had it. I could say that about several Hudson's that I have had. Arnie in Nevada.0
-
So is it fair to say that no body out there will fix a borgey ??0
-
There are people out there that repair them. Fat Boys in NJ is one. They carry parts for all the old trannys.0
-
couldnt find fat boys on google..... only a harley shop...0
-
Guessing here; The intended target is Fatsco
fatsco.com/products.htm0 -
Arnie, why do you say "Needless to say, it had problems and was not reliable so I sold it."?? The 6D Specials were exactly identical to the 7D Hornets. If your particular car was unreliable, that's a pity, but the fact of it being a Special had no bearing on the car's reliability.
I don't currently own a Borg Warner Automatic equipped Hudson, but I have had experience with them in the past. I found the Borg Warner to be extremely smooth operating and a bit more economical than it's hydramatic counterpart. I find it odd that you couldn't find a repair shop to work on your Borg Warner. Internally, the BW trans was the same as used in Fords and Studes of the day. Parts for the BW are indeed available.0 -

The "salmon" color you're referring to was probably "Roman Bronze". I would call it a salmon color, especially when faded.0 -
Fatsco's! Yes, that's it.0

Rebuilding automatic transmissions doesn't get much easier than a Borg Warner.
Pretty basic trans. Only thing I recall is the clutch packs burned up because of bad seals.0 -
Does someone need a Borgy?? I have a good one with 69,000 miles that I took out of my Special about 4 years ago when I changed engines. The new engine had a good Hydra-Matic attached so I just put in the whole shebang and am happy with the results. A reasonable offer and come and get it. I am 20 miles east of Rochester, NY. Bruce0
