  • Seems to me that a topic entitled '54 Hornet Special should have a photo or 6 of such a car.

Here are a few photos to go with yours Arkie. I am partial to the first photo taken in California when I picked it up. It should look somewhat like the last one in the photo group in a year or two.=? OK, I cleaned up my act. These are now all Specials. Mine is the first and third (the old original photo) before the car sat for years.

Arkie, Is that Green Gold with a Black top?? Don't see many in that color combination. Great looking Hudson. Of course I would think so as that's the color of mine. I don't have the lower part black.

Yes, Paul, correct, my club sedan is black over green gold, however, the car came from the factory painted solid green gold. The black appears to have been on the car for many many years and is actually in much worse condition than the original green gold which is still on the rest of the car. I suspect that the dealer sprayed on the black accents in order to move the car off the lot. This is my daily driver and has become known around my house as the Bumble Bee. If and when I ever get around to taking it off the road and restoring it, the black over Green Gold with black side flare will be retained. It has grown on me over the years.
By the way, Paul, your car looks great!

Brownie, the only 6D Hornet Special in the photos you posted is the first car, which I presume to be your coupe. The others are all 7D Hornets

    Arkie,
Ours came from the factory Black over Green Gold so we kept it the original. Glad we did. We go to many car shows in the summer here in Minnesota. People seem to love the color. It has won many awards, and I think it is the color that get's the attention. It has taken Best of show in many show's with over 500 cars. Who would of thought a Hudson could do that!! We are having a great time showing this car as it was my father's. They made fun of the Hudson's when I was in high school.

Brownie, one of the photos you posted is of a black over green gold Hornet Special club sedan that would have been a great candidate for restoration. The car was listed on Ebay and never met reserve. Rumor has it that the car was subsequently chopped and ruined :(

Still don't understand why anyone would chop a brougham. The side windows are already long and 11 inches narrow. Want another 2" ? Add those side-vent shades. Some custom stuff is just goofy to me. When I had my 2 step-down brougham/club sedans I had lots of people ask me if they were chopped.

I expect that the answer to your question of why would be "Because they can." There is a 53 custom near me that is outstanding and I would love it chopped or not.
