37 terraplane pickup purchase

Hello,

I have been reading your forum for some months now and have really appreciated the knowledge I have gained from your postings. I am hooked!

I have an opportunity to purchase a 1937 Terraplane pickup from a gentleman in a nearby town. Upon inspection, it is complete, has a fairly straight body with very little rust, but doesn't run and needs a replacement 212. The interior has all gauges, etc, but needs to be completely redone.

He also includes 2 replacement grills which are in good shape, along with spare fenders and doors.

The asking price is $7,500. Does this seem to be about right? I am trying to convince the Commanding Officer (wife) that this is a good deal and I should snap it up.

Thanks for your feedback

  • careful - where is the truck located? Wait for Niels to reply to your message. He sent a picture of a 37 truck to me a few weeks back - he was looking at it but declined to purchase it at $7,500. After seeing it I also declined to purchase it. Niels knows where the truck is and if its the same one my advice is that its way to much money for what it is. I would post the picture but its at home and I'm at work.
  • This may be the truck I was looking at if it is in the Oakland area. The owner described it quite honestly to me and it would be too much body and mechanical work for a person like me with limited skills as I need to farm these things out. It would for someone else but I know it comes with extra parts and it looked pretty straight and solid. The owner is very knowlegeable on Hudsons and I believe he just wants to get the money out that he has in it. I have talked to the owner a few times and I like him. Could you find one for a grand or two cheaper in the same condition? Maybe, maybe not. Not too many of these around. You would probably have to look awhile and then be lucky enough to find it first. My bottom line opinion is it will be worth good money when it is done and you would not lose if and when you sold it. I'm looking at buying another Hornet coupe so I decided against it. Niels
  • SEEMS LIKE A VERY HIGH PRICE. I SOLD A 37 PU THAT RAN FOR 4k RECENTLY, STILL HERE IF ANYONE WANTS TO SEE ILT. I HAVE A COMPLETELY REBUILT 37 ENGINE, BY EGGE COMPLETE WITH ANIFOLD, CARB AND STARTER ALL NEW FOR 4500.00 SO ADD THAT TO THE PURCHASE PRICE AND YOU ARE GETTING UP THERE, BILL ALBRIGHT, FONTANA, CA
  • Thanks for the input guys. I think that I will have to pass on the truck anyway, although I like the seller and think the truck has alot of potential. Yes Niels, it is the one in Oakland posted on Craigs list It's posted at http://www.craigslist.org/eby/car/134917843.html

I hate to pass on it but my wife thinks one truck on our front lawn at a time is enough!

The "Old Cars Price Guide" gives these values for a '37 Terraplane Series 70 3/4 ton:

    #5 $1956, #4 $3260 and #3 $7340.
  • Yes, the bed is straight (I saw this truck a couple of days ago). The fenders are a bit wavy and dented but the owner has replacement fenders (the ones on the truck are very repairable. There is also a replacement hood and 2 extra grills that are pretty good.

The truck is sprayed a primer black but appears to be fairly solid, just some pinholes in the cab corners. The 212 is missing the head and needs complete rebuild or replacement. Most of the interior is there...

Overall, very repairable and would make a good project.
