12v Hudson starter won't fit on 308
I got a 12v starter that is supposed to have come off a 1956ish Hornet (a 308 in any event), and it doesn't seem to quite fit where the 6v starter used to be. If all else fails, I'll just put the 6v back in I guess.
The only difference between the two seems to be that the mounting holes on the 6v (and the 308) are 6 1/2" apart, and the holes on the 12v are 5 1/2 inches apart. Is there an adapter I need to get? How can this have been mounted to a 308?

I wouldn't run the 6v starter on 12v for too long. Hard on flywheel teeth and starter Bendix units. There are 12v field windings available to fit the stepdown starters. If your shop can't find them, there's a shop in TX that can make 12v windings for you. Not really expensive (les than $100).0

I'll have a local place "Pacific Auto Electric" convert the starter to 12v.
I noticed that when I installed the 12v regulator (weeks ago, while still positive gnd), the instructions told me to "short Arm to Bat to polarize the regulator". I wonder if I fried the regulater when I swapped poles. Everything seems to work, but I'm not sure the battery is getting charged.
The gen is suddenly making a funny noise, like a bearing is going out. Hmmm

I know from experience a '55 308 starter won't fit on earlier models - the plate the bolts go thru is, as I recall, off-set from the earlier models.
Why I don't know - unless it was to clear something or other under there.

My understanding is that the flywheel is different, bigger circumference and more teeth, hence the starter has to sit further outboard.

Dont remember just what I done to the 56 12v starter that I put on a 52 Hornet a few months ago but it sure works good. Wish I had a few of the 56 12v ones to play with.0
