what is this sound??

So I have the '54 Jet running again and the lights actually work!  I still can't get the brake lights to illuminate, even after putting a new switch in.  Oh well.

But I have this strange sound that sounds like a chain rattling for a few seconds.  It occurs while the car is idling.  It comes and goes.  At first I thought it was the starter.  I had the starter break and had it rebuilt.

But the sound is still there. 

Please listen and let me know what you think.  Timing Chain? Tiny Gremlin??

    Check to see if your fan blade is hitting the generator pulley.  Mine does on my 50, I need to replace the water pump.

    Check heat riser. Sounds like spring is gone and counterweight is letting it bounce back and forth, or open and close. Spent several hours trying to find the same noise once.

    I don't see any new marks on the fan blade. But there are some old "indentations" on the back of the radiator where the fan blade once touched it.  I'm assuming the damage has been there a while, I don't see any newish marks on the blades.

    Now to the heat riser, is this the Manifold Heat Control I'm reading about on HudsonJet.net? I don't see any diagrams, so I'll look at the repair manual.  Do you happen to have any tips on checking this?

    The heat riser has a flat spiral spring on the shaft. Try pushing against the end of the shaft where ti comes through the manifold and see fi this eliminates the noise.   If so, wire it open.

    Since my hearing is not what it used to be....I can only guess that maybe the starter drive is not retracting completely and the starter is touching the ring gear a little.

    Sounds like a rattling heat riser. It is louder on the passenger side. If the HR is not hooked up, ie, spring connected, the flow of the exhaust may cause the baffle plate to bounce and make a rattle. Wire it open or with a screw driver hold the spring and see if the noise disappears.

    Thanks for the tips!  Where is the heat riser? Is it the round cover with a pin in the center on the exhaust  manifold that faces the engine (picture 1)??

    Also, what is the silver, newer, item in picture 2?  It sits right below the exhaust manifold and carb.

    fuel pump, and yes that is the heat riser.

    So is there any way to test the heat riser without removing the exhaust manifold? Posts above say to push against the end of it and wire it open.

    In looking at the first picture your heat riser is missing the spring and is wired open already (or it could be wired shut)
