Supercharger

Anyone fool around with adding a supercharger to their Hudson? I see this one on ebay and I am curious as the price is good right now.

Rudy Bennett has experience with supercharing Hornets the pictures posted that show the Australian two piece head include a picture of a Hornet powered speed boat that is equipped with a supercharger.
  • Also check out Uncommonengineering.com as they have some pics of some blown Hud 6's.

Watch out when you buy a used Paxton-type blower. I spent 385.00 last year on NEW-PARTS alone on mine to make it New. The Ball Drive shaft is the thing that goes bad and you will need a complete-kit,and the kicker here is locating the parts. there is only one place to buy parts and that is in Southern Calif. but they want to rebuild them and would rather not sell the parts.

I had one on a 54- 308 engine and back then I used an Aluminum 262 head. Bad Mistake, as the head gasket + the head would not let it stay together even at 4 psi. . Use a 308 c.i. head ( lower compression ) and it will stay together + have lots of power when using the 2-barrel carb and pressure box from a 1954 Kaiser 262 engine. ( the carb and pressure box will bolt right up to the Hudson 2-barrel manifold. I think that the Studebaker carb and box will also fit the Hudson manifold.

    Hope this helps Hudsonly Rudy
  • Thanks for the info guys. I have two 308's I am rebuilding and one of them is going to be full race so I am thinking of what I am going to do to pull that last hp out of the engine. I was wondering about supercharging though I think I might go with a newer supercharger. Just looking around for things to add.

I seem to recall that the optimum valve timing and cam profile should be somewhat different for a supercharged engine, so you may want to look into that while you're still "building."
  • Thanks Park I am looking at the valve timing, cam and chamber profile as part of my "what if" exploration of this.

I can back up the problems of the ball drive as I was the Service Manager for Paxton from 93 to 95. Not a popular position to have. That job about killed me as the blowers would typically go out shortly after warranty and the complete rebuild which was all we offered was 695.00 with only a 90 day warranty. I can't tell you the grief I went through in that job. The ball drive is very quiet and has a good step up ratio for its size. If rpm's are not too high and boost levels are under 6psi, they can be reliable. They lived quite a while on the older cars they were designed for, but they are no match for the rpm's and boost pressures engines and customers demand today.
