Calif. Registration ?

I know some of you on here live in Calif. I have year of manufacture plates on my Hudson in my case are 1929 Calif. plates. The last time I registered the car was 1995 and the tag has both the month and year on the one tag. I just got my new tag after being none operational since 1995 and the new tag looks like a normal tag with just the year on it that cost me $61.00 for a stinkin tag. Does anyone here have the older plates with new tags ? Do I need to contact DMV and get another tag or is this the way it is now ? Thanks Ron

    I wish you well, When I moved to California in 1990 I carried a set of 1953 Ca plates with me in hopes of using them to register my car. What a goat rope ... before it was all over I thought the DMV was going to confiscate my legally purchased year plates and fine me for trying to use them before some invisible inspection had occured. I registered the car as standard transport vehicle for the three years I was there... upon return to Tx ... I was able to reregister my car for 5 years to the same TX 1953 plates I had previously used for $75.



    Ca DMV and CARB give me a stomach ache!!!

    I have the correct California 1947 plates with the original 1948 metal registration tags on my 48 Commodore. I bought the plates and tags at Pomona Swap meet and they were guaranteed to clear DMV, which they did. DMV sent me both the Month AND the year stickers. I would guess DMV wants you to use your existing month sticker or possibly they simply forgot it. Regardless, I do know you need both. If you belong to AAA, go to them first and they can tell you for sure instead of going to DMV. Niels

    When I got the AA tag for my 54 I asked about using a 54 tag that I had found and restored. I was told by the clerk to use the 54 tag but the AA tag had to be in the car, so I could show it to the law in case I was stopped in a roadblock or something like that. No paper work at all on the 54 tag.....One of the rodders in town told me to get a letter from the county clerk, and carry it in the car just in case.

    Does anyone know if it is possible to register "old plates" in PA????



    I don't think it is, but that would be really a cool thing to do.

    Wondered about this myself, I just checked with the DMV and the answer is no.


    However they do have a specialty plate program, which if you wanted to jump through all the red tape hoops and give up your antique plate and go back to purchasing a yearly plate, we could probably have a HET plate made for Het members in PA.

    Oklahoma is very similar to Maryland's procedure, but in addition to what MD requires, OK also issues a white and black windshield sticker with the current year on it. YOM tags are treated the same as personalized tags, in terms of display and cost. OK also requires the normal issued tag be inside the car somewhere. As long as the YOM tag is not a current combination on ANY currently registered vehicle in the State (including other YOM tags), the tag will be allowed. Oklahoma had annual tags (with new plates!) every year up to 1980, then annual stickers were issued. So, if your car is 1980 or earlier, YOM's can be run.
