Super Induction
I have seen in some of my readings on what Hudson came out with in 54 called Super Induction. Seems like it was an increase in power on the 308's over previous models. My question is what is it? I should have my 54 in a couple of days from being transported in and though it has supposedly 66,000 original miles, the motor was rebuilt somewhere along the line for reasons I haven't found out yet and a 262 head was put on. I assume that has messed up the Super Induction package to one extent or another. Also any idea how many Hornet Special 2 dr sedans were made. As I understand it, it was the only year for the Special and the fastback looking roofline.

If you have the a 54 308 you will have the relieved block already. The addition of the 262 head is actually better than the stock 308 head. The 262 head will raise the compression but not not change the chamber to a great extent. So you should have a nice setup the way it is. You can sweeten this with a street grind cam from Randy Maas and Twin H if it does not have it already. Though I think you might find it drives pretty nice already.
To fully answer the question of what Super Induction is its the relieved block and a hotter cam that has a longer dwell. The Club store has a DVD I think its number 1 that has a nice factory film strip about Super Induction for 54.
Don't have production numbers with me here, have them at home but they are pretty low for that model.0 -
"Super-Induction" is actually a high-blown term for a very basic modification, which was applied to all '54 models, including the Jet. Instead of having just a flat surface from the valves to the cylinder, they ground off a small section of the surface of the block, hollowing it out, to give slightly better induction charge flow into the cylinder. Together with the changed cam to give more overlap, it ostensibly worked wonders according to theory. Whether it increased the temperature significantly to the top ring land which is more exposed to the burning charge is questionable. However, things like that do make a difference. I fitted Vauxhall pistons to my 1928 Essex, which had a slight wedge on them, from halfway across the piston top, with the high point of the wedge furtherest away from the valves, and a slightly lower flat section on top of the piston. This made an incredible difference in the way the car performed. Hudson actually brought out the first "Power dome" in the 1929 Essex, which was a "waisted" combustion chamber for higher compression, with a recess in the top to give more swirl to the mixture, hence better atomisation. My '28 goes better than a '29 however, with the wedge pistons. I have never driven a '53 Jet or Hornet, so I have nothing to compare, but when I rebuild my Hornet engine next year I will "Super-induct" it and see how it goes. Best wishes,

In '54 they callex the 2 door sedan model "Club Sedan" but it the exact same thing as a "brougham"0

I haven't seen or heard it called a Brougham anywhere. I believe this is the only year for that roofline in a 2 door. At least I haven't seen one in an earlier year and one of my Hudson books says that is the only year. I will post a picture as soon as I figure out how to do it. I am trying to find out from one of the previous owners what was done to the engine. I know it was painted blue which is not correct and has a 262 head. I hope it is the original 54 block and cam. I may look into opening up the exhaust and either Twin-H or twin 2bbls on a Twin H manifold. That's about it. I bought it as a near turn key car that I can just enjoy and get familiar with. I have several other car, motorcycle and boat projects already going so for the time being I don't want to make a project of it.0

Search "Brougham" on this forum, and you'll find a few pics of that roofline.0

Hudson called that a 2dr Club Sedan in 54. They did not use the Brougham term for it but lots of people have applied that term as a lot of dealers called it a Brougham. You will not find any reference from the factory to this as a brougham. I have the factory docs and its listed as 2dr. Club Sedan. The Brougham was only used for the convertibles in 54.
You have a nice looking car I have always prefered that long rear window to the 2dr Club Coupe. I am looking for one like this to drop my hot 308 engine into, then lookout world.....:eek:0 -
The 2 door sedan a/k/a Brougham has the same roof line and trunk lid as the 4 door sedans. The coupes and convertibles share the same trunk lid, which is longer than the sedan.
This is a picture of my 49 super 6 Brougham.0 -

I don't think I have seen one of those. I can't tell to well from the size and angle of the photo but it does look somewhat similar. I was going to say in my description that my car looks like a two door with a 4 door roofline. I had never seen one until this car came up and have yet to see one other than in pictures.0 -
The two door sedan body was available in all lines from 48-54 But not in a Hornet until 54 and then only as the Hornet Special.(Super Wasp trim) So If you see a 48-53 two door sedan (Bro.) it will be a Commodore , Super , Pacemaker, or Wasp. All the stepdown convertibles, were based on the Brougham body not a coupe.Thats probably why Hudson called them Convertible Broughams.0

Enjoy these pictures of 2 door sedans.0

Steve Traut in Texas has a beautiful 54 Wasp Broughm. I saw it when he stopped in Asheville NC for a meet as He was driving it back to Texas. As I said it was a beautiful car.

Now this all clarify's things. Does anyone have any idea what the production was for the 54 Special two door sedan? Was it lower than the two door coupe?0
