47 PU - which ford rear end

I have been told by all of the Hud experts to put in a Ford 9" rearend. Well time to share your knowledge. Please tell me which one to use and any information I may need to make the change. I have a 308 with the 3 on the column. I may want to change to a turbo 350 with Dany Springs adapter later on.

    I use the '57 58 and 59 Ford. The spring perches are in the right place. The E-brake cables are the same. The only thing you need to add are 1" spacers between each rear wheel and drum.Or get wheels with a different offset. I have one in my '36, my '40, and I just got one at a swap meet to put in my 47 coupe ($150.00).

    Chevy has the wrong bolt pattern for Hudson wheels. Only Big Ford and most MoPar 5 lug axles have the correct bolt pattern. I put a 1968 Plymouth Fury Axle in my 1940...it is about 1/2 inch wider, same bolt pattern for the Hudson wheels, but the spring perches are not the same, as Hudson is canted inward toward the front.

    PS - the 1940 is for sale, a nice rust-free driveable car, with a bolt-in axle that will fit any 1937-1947 Hudson product.

    I've decided to put a rear end from a 54 hornet into my 49. Should bolt right in and is a better rear end.

    hudson dave .the car and the truck are different the truck needs a 61-63 t-bird a 3.0 or a 3.25 is an all around good gear. with a 308 an all that torque if you want a good hi-way gear a 273 will do the trick.61-63 big car galaxies,custom fit the car perfect.you will have to replace the saddles they can be bought at most any good auto part or hot rod shop. when hunting for a rear end measure the distance between the backing plates. this is important there is about six different lengths . i have done both .hudson dave

    I have a 1947 Hudson pick-up with a 1956 308 and 3 speed overdrive. I have been well satisfied with the 9 inch Ford rear end I put in probably 10 yrs ago. I bought a 1971 Cougar rear axle drum to drum out of an auto trans Cougar so it had 3 to 1 ratio.

    That was not a good ratio for the truck but I switched to a 3:50 ring set and that works OK, but I plan to find and switch to about 3:78 gears. About all I had to do was

    cut off spring perch mounts and weld them inboard about an inch. Brake hydraulic and cables went on with a little modification but straight-forward. Drum bolt pattern fits the Hudson wheels which I use and then can also use Hudson hubcaps. And one spare tire will fit front or back wheel. Worked for me. Probably Cougar 1971-73 the same rear axle width - but certainly check width against Hudson original.
