Center steering pin...again
I seem to recall reading on this forum, that some people had some problems with the repro center steering pins. I'm going to add my name to the list. Years ago I replaced a pin and bearings that I got from Jack Clifford. I put many miles on that car with no further slop. A few years ago I bought a kit from Kgap (?). I know this car hasn't beem driven three thousand miles since I installed it. The pin is galled and grooved. Looks terrible and steering is sloppy.I am going to replace the bad one with a NORS TRW pin with a brass bushing . If you have replaced your pin and bearings and the looseness has returned.. Check it out. Must be a very soft pin.
Before I call Kostansek...Anyone have a step down king pin and bushing set for sale? I have a loose left one.

Randy Maas has center pin kits. And it is true the replacements are not surface hardened so you need to install them with bronze bushings to avoid galling the pin. Ken Cates site has a nice writeup on this problem.0

I machine a bushing to replace the Torrington bushings originally supplied for the center stg housing. If your pin is good, replacing just the bushing I supply should work as long as you also check the reassembled housing for any up and down movement which is present and add some sort of shims. Bushing is $30 + $5 shipping. Email me at HETgtokristi@networld.com if you would like more info or have questions. By the way this bushing is for stepdowns only (do not believe power stg bushing is the same so unless I learn different - will not work on ps). Thanks, Gert Kristiansen, Deseret Chapter. There may be members on this board who have installed my bushing - please give us your feedback on its merits or otherwise.0

I used a Moog part, Not a TRW as I previously stated. It was an old replacement bushing and pin kit, not the bearing as originally supplied by Hudson.. Probably the same thing as offered by some Het members. I can tell you it made a world of difference. Having just finished a fixtoration of a 54 with PS. I don't think there is any difference in the center pin and mount. Having said that, this 54 car did have a much different pin and bearing mount that has been described to me as being a "steering stabilizer". An aftermarket device. I would like to have another. I have some pictures of the parts I can send to anyone that would like to see them. I have really bad luck/skill in posting pictures! The big difference was that the pin is longer and the bushings are further apart. Seems to give a lot more leverage and support. I still need king pins for the 49 though.0
