Replacing transmission seals.

So, while the transmission is out, laying on the floor, I'm thinking I'd be crazy not to at least replace the seals.  I've got them ordered and on the way.  Anything out of the ordinary that I need to know about the replacement?   Can I just rip out the old one with a a seal removal tool and then tap in the new one with the aid of a big socket or cutoff pipe?
Throw me a bone, guys...k

K, do you have the info on the shift lever shaft seal?  Holler if not.

  • I guess not, Park.   What am I missing?

First, please confirm for my old brain what you're working on.  "48-'51?  Sorry I can't see enough of the left side to tell for sure.

  • Mine is a '50.  With OD...k

OK  ... I was waiting to hear what year
    tranny it is.

On the main tranny, there's a small seal on the shaft for
    the shift lever.
    As I recall not too
difficult to remove, though I seem to remember you have to knock out the
tapered pin that keeps the shaft in place.
    Service manual will confirm  That
seal is noted as item K7-3 in the parts book.
There's an identical seal on the overdrive too, for the lockout lever
    shaft, AKA "overdrive control shaft."
It's ID'd as item K9-28 in the parts book.  NAPA 6125 is a good number for this seal.

Just didn't want you to go through the whole process and
end up with oil leakage from these shafts!

Mucho thanks Park.   I've got a gasket kit coming, I'll make sure I look for those seals...k
