304614 engine number

If I understand the numbering system right, is this a 54 Hornet engine number?

  • Kerry, That number is a starter to solenoid cable part number. 51-54
  • Alex Burrs information hand book lists the date the car with that number was built June 1954. If it has the reiforced rib along left side of block it is a 308 Hornet engine. But someone may come up with a known special order 308 in a Wasp or Super Wasp since Hudson or the dealer was know to make exceptions to satisfy a customer. The number 304614 is a date code. All 54 models numbers start with 269060. The model prefix to that number determines the models 1D, 2D, 3D, 4D, 5D, 6D, 7D. Not part of the engine #.

    1DJet 6 (1D- 269060-319720) (1D-304614)

    6D Hornet Special 6 (6D-269060-319720) (6D-304614)

    7D Hornet 6 (7D-269060 - 319720) (7D-304614)

That extra rib is the determining factor for a 308 which is on all 308 Hornets unless engine ordered special with other size engine. The rib is not on any other engines.

  • Why not identify by using the block casting number?  Much easier to see, especially us "old" guys
    with visual challenges.
304539 is the number used on 51-53 Hornets.
310111     is used on 1954 Hornets
532500   is used on 55-56 Hornets

This number is located below the distributor.     This info is posted on Alex Burrs HET library.
