Headlight relay

I know this topic has been covered many times, but I wasn't able to bring up much info in my search.
Any way does anyone have a wiring diagram for a  headlight relay to suit my 52 Hornet c/w the original 6 volt system?

  • Is it that you have obtained a headlight relay and don't know how to wire it?   If so, is it a dual or single relay?  What are the terminals (that is: do they have labels)?
  • No, I haven't sourced a relay as yet, looking for advice

My advice would be to check the internet and local car flea markets for a nice NOS dual headlight relay.(Or try Dave Kostansek)  Wiring instructions will come with it.  The dual relay is a bit less cumbersome than having to mount two single relays.  Whichever you use, however, one relay (or half the dual relay) handles the high beams, the other, the low beams.  Takes a lot of stress off your system (with its miles of fraying wires, and series of switches that were never that good to begin with).  With the relay, the whole system now simply sends a low-amperage "signal" to the relay, which does all the heavy lifting and sends power directly to the lights.  And of course this means the lights will be marginally brighter.  It's a good investment if you really plan to drive the car at night.

In my '37, I hid the relay in the dashboard, accessible by the removable panel on the driver's side (which I hinged for added accessibility).  I even used a single relay to assist the radio, whose switch also was not very good and heated up a lot;  I hid that relay next to the headlight relay, behind the dash.

There is one on eBay right now.  6V ones are getting hard to find and that is what this one is

  • Dave the attached JPEG will should answer all the questions you may have about adding relays to your headlight circuit.  If the car is original 6 volts the diagram is still applicable... most 12 volt relays will switch with a 6 volt input. If that does not suit your fancy... BOSCH manufactures a 6 volt plug and play replacement that will work with this diagram and instructions.

  • I got mine from Fifth Ave Internet   Garage, Randy Rundle. Instructions included.
  • I believe these are single, not dual relays, so you will need two for high and low beams.  Personally I like the older dual ones in the steel box, similar to a voltage regulator.  I painted my cover black and it blends in on the inner fender really well.
  • You can use th single relay to feed the dimmer switch, still taking the load off of the headl;ioght switch.
