No and Yes. I tried to find a Petronix unit for the H8 last year and there was none. However, Petronix will make you a custom for about $325.00, but it will be a one off and if it dies you will need to buy another one. The Packard 8 unit is very close but not close enough. So Yes you can get one, but it is far from affordable. I would love to have one but !!!!!! I doubt there are enough of us for Petronix to consider making it a standard unit.0

Pish-posh! A set of old-fashioned points and a condenser is much cheaper. And you can't file a worn Petronix if it quits on the road. LOL!0

I have no knowledge of a current suitable sub ... but there are folks who have used existing MOPAR electronic distributors as the basis of a replacement for the 6 cylinder cars. It seems logical to conclude there may be an existing 8 cylinder electronic ignition distributor whose drive rod could be replaced with a Hudson? Just a thought... where are the experimenters?

Crane cam makes a unit that fit my 48 Hudson eight perfectly for about $125. a few years ago. (www.cranecam.com) It worked until the spring clip fell out of the rotor somehow. (I swore I didn't do it but don't ask my wife) and I pulled the electronic distributor thinking it was the problem. It will probably go back in this summer.0

Fred,
I was on the crane website and couldn't find what you located for your distributor from them. Could you give more details of just what it is you purchased and what listing it was under? Or did they have to have your distributor to get on set up on it?
Part numbers would be great too!
I have a 37 straight 8 I would like to get something set up on in the next few months but was only aware of the Petronix option.

I have a Crane Cams set-up on my 308 that works great. Box says "XR700 Ignition"
has a disc under the rotor with slots in it so I'm guessing it's some kind of optical trigger.
Don't know much else about it,have only had the car for 9 months.
UPDATE! Looks like I'm getting a little education on my ignition.
Crane Cams link for XR700 My unit must be a vintage version as my box is
gold anodized and looks a little dated...0 -
Here's a pic. Box is located on the end of the battery tray to give you
an idea of the size.0 -
It will not work with 6V so you will need to convert to 12V if you want to use one.0

Dan, when I got mine they offered 6 or 12 volt, negative or posative ground. (not in same unit) Mine is the 12 volt negative ground.

Years ago when I lived in Reno, I used a Mallory Unilite that was installed in the original Hudson distributor. Of course, that was 12v. Perhaps Rustjunkey or NevadaHudson can check it out if there's enough interest as Mallory is located in Carson City.
On another note, I stumbled across vintageiginition(s?).com the other day and the website looked interesting.0 -

Sounds like one we used to make till mallory stop selling the shafts that we used0 -
I have found a British company (Pazon Ignitions) that sells a electronic unit for 6 volts, positive ground that uses the stock points. I am aware that this not a hi-tech solution, but the points will last for 25,000 miles or more and if the unit fails it can be converted back to stock and the car driven home. The link is below. Be sure to read the PDF file.
