factory engine paint

I think I saw this on a thread quite awhile back but can't remember the details. Does anyone know if the factory painted the 308 engine components before assembly, or after ?? Specifically what I'm getting at is --- when you re-assemble an engine after rebuild, is it correct to have the gasket edges painted, or should they be showing as their natural color ??

Just nit-picking here, but might as well put it back together correctly I guess.

  • best to paint the engine components separately; then assemble. If red, use Ford Red (Auto-Zone).

I plan to purchase cadmium-plated bolts (head-grade 8, timing chain cover, oil pan, etc.)

A little extra goes a long way at shows and resale!!

From clues I've seen, it appears the factory painted the engine and tranny package after assembly, except for starter, generator, distributor, carbs. If it's supposed to be gold, I recommend Duplicolor 500 degree engine paint (spray can), in "Universal Gold" ... an excellent match to the original color. NAPA and others carry it.
