Speaker

Dan,
I believe all early stepdowns took a 6" x 9" oval speaker on the dash top. Easy to get to, and readily available from many places. I've changed over to 12V, so I can play a modern stereo (hidden behind the dash), and I've put a pair of 4" high output speakers in a 6" x 9" frame, so I can listen to stereo. Looks no different once installed. Good Luck0 -
Okay, what can the 6 volt guys use as an alternative? Does speaker voltage matter? or is there such a thing? can we go to Radio Shack or the like, and buy a 6x9 speaker, and wire it up?0

Speaker voltage doesn't care if your car is 12V or 6V, as long as the radio works, you can bolt in any old 6 x 9 and it will work.0

yeah, I was kind of thinking of even trying to wire an ipod thru so I could play a ton of 50's Doo Wop... all of the time... at least until i get tired of it...
Pretty sure my radio glows and hums, might actually play with a speaker....
but I sure like the ipod idea...0 -
Well, my original, 6V Hudson radio is not installed in the dash as of now, but I plan to put it back in once I change the dash color and find the left and right knobs that are missing. I also plan to install a receiver - probably inside the glove box or under dash that has an auxillary input jack for connecting the Ipod or external CD player that will sit with me on the seat. Electrical has been converted to 12V and hiding the "modern" receiver should not be a problem in the glove box. May also get a receiver with the small hand-held remote control so I do not have to lean over much....
A little Sinatra goes a loooooong way...0 -

Just another idea to ponder. I've also converted to 12V and am going to hinge the front of the tissue dispenser and put a modern stereo inside that will be remote-controlled. Leave it open while driving, close it up and hide it when parked, and the glove box remains a place to store the gloves . . . or whatever it is we actually store in there. The original radio is staying where it is and lights up when the dash lights are on, so it still looks "original". The tissue dispenser has been mounted in the middle of the dash (underneath, of course) and made so that the driver will still be able to reach it, if necessary. Currently looking into XM, as the choices for genres are virtually unlimited. Also, as a sidenote, I'm hiding some cig. lighters (these days translation: power receptacles) in the rear for power to 'puters, DVD players, etc. Really a benefit when changing to 12V.

We have XM in our new car and I just put one of the Delphi units in my father-in-laws '91 Buick Estate Wagon. He loves classical and it does a greate job. Very nice. He can cruise to my brother-in-laws in SC from Philly and not change the station.0
