Steering Wheel Restoration - HELP!
Hello everyone,
I have a 37 hudson banjo steering wheel which I really need to restore. It's a little odd feeling and possibly even a little if unsafe for me to drive it with not much to hold on to other than the skinny metal ring.
It looks as though the plastic around the ring (outer ring I would hold on to drive that is) has come off some time in the past.
Can one do this themselves or does it need to be done by professional and if so, then who may you recommend??
As always, I appreciate your thoughts!

Unless you are phenomenally-talented, you will have to go to a steering wheel restoration company and pay several hundred dollars to have the plastic recast....after having the hub rechromed, of course. And when you are finished you will have a mono-color plastic rim, not the same variegated, speckled finish as original. (To do that, most people have the speckling painted on then clear coated). Go to the SERVICES section of Hemmings Motor News (you might also try www/Hemmings.com) to find the contact information for companies in this line of business.
If you are intent on originality, there is one company who will actually cast the rim and coat the horn button in the original 'speckled' plastic, but they are in Australia (see photo). They're at http://www.pearlcraft.com.au/welcome.htm .0 -
I found a NOS for my 49, but used this guy to recast my 31 Packard wheel. He was reasonably priced and got it back to me quickly. Give him a call and see if he can help you. Bill Peters, Steering Wheel Restoration. (631) 271-3686 (long island, NY). There are others I considered, including JB Donaldson in Phoenix (602) 278-4505, but in the end he had the best price and I was comfortable with him. Wheel looks like new.0

Ok, at $500 to $800 to fix my banjo wheel, I need other options. I was looking at aftermarket banjo wheels and can get those for around $225- $250! Has anyone used an aftermarket wheel and if so what things might I need to consider when looking for one?
Or does anyone know of a good used/nos at a resonable price?
Thanks again!0 -
