Looking for a Hornet '51 to'54 I have approx. 5K to spend. :eek:

    You don't mention where you've been looking, so far. Here are the best sources:



    1) Ebay (caveat emptor!)

    2) White Triangle News ad section (join the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane Club to get this magazine) and word-of-mouth in the H-E-T network.

    3) Hemmings Motor News, Cars & Parts, or Old Cars Weekly ad sections



    Judging by the rather astonishing escalation in prices paid for 'decent' Hudson Step-Downs lately, you must now pay $10,000 to get what $5,000 got you two or three years ago. So alocate your $5,000 wisely. The drive train condition is secondary to body condition; engine and transmission parts are much easier to find for a Hudson, than body parts, and professional restoration of a rusted-out frame will consume thousands of dollars that could otherwise have been spent to make an already-decent car into a gem.



    Better to spend the five grand on a Hudson with a solid, undented and unrusted body but no engine and a tatty interior, than to spend it on something that looks good from 15 feet away, runs and drives well, but has a Swiss-cheese perimeter frame from the rear wheels back. Be awfully careful.

    I would stay away from the 51 in Canada. It's a real headache trying to get anything like that through customs. The second car the 54 is an interesting car. It's a 54 hornet special that sounds like it's in decent shape. I actually called on both and the 54 sounds interesting. Good luck
  • careful of the 54 if you look closely in the pic of the drivers side you can see rust above the fender skirt. Might not be bad but you need to do a good rust check before you buy. Also I have seen that 51 for a while and something about that car is wrong. Looks like Hornet badges on a pacemaker maybe, and the front turn signals are off a 52.
  • the car in Canada was posted for sale in 2004, I doubt it's still available, to bad to I live near Buffalo.

    I was watching and waiting for the '54. When the guy drove my '49 out of my drive I called country Classics and they said Otis bought the car that day. Oh Well the search continues.

    They are out there. I watched and called on cars for months until I found my 1952 Hornet in Battle Mountain, Nv. It was a creme puff, never hit, no rust, all glass and interior intact for $1,256.00. You just have to watch, and have your funds ready to move immediately, because there are others waiting too. As the others stated a rust free body is better than a good driveline. Good luck and Happy Future Hudsoning.

  • Just my 2 cents.....Lets assume you get one for say 5K and it is rust free, but it needs Interior ( Around 2K ), Paint (around 2k) Chrome (1k and up)...so far you have at least 10K tied up and that is without ANY Mechanical work involved.



    I think you are better off spending the money to start with and getting a car that is

    pretty much done when you get it....There are Nice ones out there starting around 8k

    and up....Let someone else put the money into the restoration cause you don't often get much of that back unless you do most of the work yourself
