Distributors

On my 54 Hornet I noticed two things on the distributor. First the vacuum advance was blown and Bill Albright got me a replacement. Second something seems goofy with the centrifugal. When I twist the rotor, the advance moves but does not return. Are there springs on the centrifugal and should it snap back when I twist and release it? Every other dist I have worked on with centrifugal does, but I don't know if the Hudson is different. I am going to tear into it tonight to put the vacuum canister in and I wanted to know if I should pick up some springs somewhere, if one is broken or missing.

Thanks,

My car has had a temporary electric pump added to it. Previous owner said the mechanical was weak. What does that mean? I would think being a diaphram pump it would either work or not work. I don't want to keep this temporary pump on it. Are there original pumps still out there with the wiper motor pump on them? Is there a test I should perform first on this pump. It's a 54 308 and the vacuum side seems to pull vacuum on my vacuum gauge.

    Thanks
  • The diaphram pump can indeed be weak. The rubber diaphram ages and weakens. Call up Dave Kostanek and Tim Cheney Suppliers of Waterpumps, Carbs, oil pumps, rebuild kits and much more. 7902 Rt.7, Williamsfield Ohio 44903 (440)994-9173 or (440)293-4079 call before 8pm EST

The centrigugal does have springs, and the rotot should spring back when you release it. If it doesn't, remove the breaker plate and drop a small bit of light machine oil on the pivot pins for the advance weights and anywhere else where moving parts rub against each other. Don't over lube, or it'll attract dust and get sticky again. And by the way, don't be surprised at the small amount of movement the vacuum advance has ... these critters don't use much vacuum advance compared to most engines, as you can see from the spec's.

Didn't even think it could just be the pivots. I think I have to pull the plate to put the new canister in anyway. Only looked at it for a short time.
