Off Topic ? for you Kiwis - Re: RHD
This is not a Hudson question, but since a few of you are from NZ here goes. A friend of mine who moved to Mangonui in North island, NZ says that if you want to bring a car over (and you intend to live there) it must be converted to RHD if younger than 20 years. Is this statement accurate? It has no effect on my Pace but both my wife and I drive Land Rovers (hers is a 2000 Disco II and mines a '88 RR Classic) which fall into this category. If so, any ideas on approximate cost to do this? Is it cost prohibited such that its easier to buy a vehicle over there?
We are traveling to the Doubtless Bay area in May and are not sure if a move is in the future for us or not (will be looking for real estate and/or biz to purchase), but would be helpful info to us.

I'll have to check on the regulations regarding newer vebicles, but there are heaps of classic vehicles that are l.h.d. You have to get a permit to drive them, but once that's done there are no hassles. As far as cost is concerned, it would depend on the availability of the r.h.d. components. Remember we haven't had any great quantity of American vehicles here since the 70's, so it would have to be something that you can get the r.h.d. parts for. I'll enquire and keep you posted.

Thanks Geoff:
I know there would be no problem w/ my Pacemaker, just concerned about the Land Rovers. I'll await your reply. :-)

You'll love Doubtless Bay I lived there for a couple of years in the '80's. Karikari Beach is the best beach in NZ IMO.0

If I'm reading the website correctly, I can bring in my Pace and my wife's Disco II since one is over 20yo and the other is under 20 years old. It appears you can only register one of these types each during your first 5 years as a resident.
I hope you're right Terraplane8, my friend (who does video production) shot a dvd for the local tourism folks (in Doubtless Bay) and it looks wonderful. I love the beach (having lived in Santa Barbara, CA for 5 years) and the home prices appear to be very reasonable versus ocean/harborview homes in the West here. I reviewed the tax structure a little bit, and it appears higher than here, but I guess everything is relative. My friend says its kind of expensive to live there though they don't regret moving there (they used to be here in Arizona) If we like our visit, I will probably be looking for a biz to buy or go into partnership on. But we should have a fun time!

And don't forget to visit Nelson, the sunniest place in the country - 3 National parks, 2 Marine reserves, 5 rivers, and great motoring territory with lots of back roads with little traffic!

Be sure to look up HET members wherever you travel in NZ if time allows. With this thread you have had replies from mid North Island down to Queenstown!

there is a guy by the name Frank weeks and he is doing all the hemi trucks here converting them based in west Auckland, but spoke to car dealer here and if you have owned them for awhile you can bring them into nz, the only previso is you cannot sell them for5 years and you would get a l/h permitt0
