Shocks
So what is everyone running for shocks. They are shot including the rubber bushings on mine and my parts buddy can find a standard Hydraulic Monroe for the rear and can't find anything for the front. I gave him the numbers off Ken' site for the gabriels, but they won't come up on the system. There must be something out there that fits? Thoughts and comments.

Be careful about the shocks on the back. Some of the part numbers published in various places are not correct in that the shock will fit but won't collapse enough, resulting in bottoming on the shocks. I don't know about the fronts.0
-
From a similar discussion on this forum some time ago, I copied the following number (for front shocks fitting Step-Downs): Advance Auto Parts #20829 (gas charged).
You would do well to first check this out with dimensions, by measuring your old shock then going down to your nearest Advance store.0 -
The proper dimensions of the shocks are listed in the Hudson shop manuals.0
-
Looks like Gabriel had alienated themselves from all the local warehouses so 82026 which is supposed to be the magic number for the fronts is proving to be difficult to obtain. 31094 Monroes are good for the rear, my parts guy already got them in, but so far no number on a Monroe front.0

i put s 10 shocks on my 46 just do away with the plate with the two holes two bolts and nuts wa la0
-
Interesting, but I think a 46 is a totally different beast than a stepdown0
-
Car Quest has front shocks for crossover of Gabriel 82026, rear is 47126. The rubber bottom bushings for the rear have to be shaved slightly to install. Also Monroe 31094 will fit rear. All are gas charged.0

464Saloon,
I just bought the #82026 Gabriels from Autozone last week. The store didn't have them on the shelf but ordered them overnight with no problem. Collasped and extended lengths are right. I used the Napa gas charged shocks listed on the stepdown restoration site for the rear (Napa #94080). They were instock and the same extended and collasped lengths as stock.

At least one person went to a real Auto Parts store, One that isn't staffed by a highschooler. Get to know your local parts person. No wonder people have problems getting parts0

yup, unless you go armed with information, and numbers, don't go into any of the Advanced Auto Parts, Autozones, or Pep Boys, and expect to get a proper part or something that will work adequately. Anymore, I just look up my own parts at Autozone, using their own computer terminals, and it saves some time... most of the "kids" that work there, never even heard of a Hudson...0 -

I have a buddy that works in a good parts store, the problem is (at least in my area) Gabriel has ticked off all the wearhouses to the point that no one handles them. So far he hasn't been able to find anything else that fits from the other companies. He actually had the rear Monroe's in stock, but after contacting Monroe, they don't have anything that will work on the front. We have Autozones in my area, I'll try them.0

This is out of the Gabriel Catalog on what the 82026 fits. Don't know how accurate it is but it is quite a spread of cars and the Hudson isn't even mentioned.

John - Would you give me the phone # of the Autozone that got you the Gabriel #20826 shocks? please. Norm0
-
Norm, I will get it for you tomorrow morning and post it. It is located in Carson City,NV.0
-
Norm,
I went downstairs and I had the receipt here. The phone number is 775 883-2090. They list the shock as a #359273 Classic shock, not the Gabriel 82026. Evidently they crossed the Gabriel number. I will check the shocks tomoirrow and find out the manufacturer and P#. I laid out the shocks side by side with the originals I removed and they were correct extended and collasped. Same size mounting rods and threads.
I'll post you tomorrow when I get to the shop and look at the shocks.\
John0 -
Norm,
I checked the shocks from Autozone this morning. They bear no manufacturers name, show a part number 739026, then made in Mexico, and below that Q06163. Autozone states on my receipt that these hold a lifetime guarantee and as I stated before they were identical to my stock shocks except they are gas, have good paint, and are clean.
I hope this helps.
Good Luck and Happy Hudsoning,
John0 -
Has anyone found a shock to fit the 37 Hudson? (74 series 8cyl sedan)
Thanks.0 -
Monroe has them for the front too. Don't have the number here with me but they bolted right in and Made in USA. Can't beat that since I pulled the original Monroe's out which of course were made in USA as was all things in those days.0
-
Thanks - John. I checked at a local Autozone and they can be ordered and at a good price. Norm0

Glad to help, the more Hudsons the merrier.0

Monroe Sensatrac 5751 work perfectly and you have the same manufacturer that was originally on the car.0

I'm assuming that the Sensatrac 5751 is for the front?
If so, the combination of Monroe 5751 Sensatrac on front and 31094 on the back sounds good. Are the 31094's good as far as compressed length compared to original specifications?
Mark0 -
Mark,
Yes they are for the front. They don't match up exactly to the Hudson specs, but they do match up perfectly to the 82026 which everyone appears to have been using. So far I have put about 70 miles on the car and they are working fine. The 31094 match up to Hudson specs and they are listed in the Monroe catalog as fitting the Hudson. Strangely enough we couldn't come up with a Sensa Trac that would fit in the back so we would have a match to the front. The Sensa Tracs are a better quality more expensive unit, but when dealing with Hudsons beggars can't be choosers. I was happy to get a combination on there that fit and worked well. The urethane bushings on the front sway bar helped a lot too.0 -

I really appreciate your work on this! I called my local, hometown run, NAPA and ordered them this morning.
Sensatrac 5751 - $41 each
Monroe 31094 - $21 each
Should be in by Saturday, which is the day I'll rework the rear brakes and put new K-Gap bushings in the suspension. Finally!
Mark0 -
My bushings are Energy Suspension and were right off the shelf from a local speed shop. I don't know if I can match up rears fro that funky bar in the back, but when I get to it, I will see if I can come up with something that will work. The bushings still seem OK in the back, the fronts had fallen out from just old age.0

Metro rubber has reproduce the rear Panhard bar bushings in regular rubber. Let me know if you find a replacement in polyurethane.
John0 -
K-Gap also has all the suspension bushings, including the massive rear panhard bar bushings. The front sway bar kit includes new bolts, but you can just get the bushings alone.
I've had them all for quite some time, but just now getting around to putting them in the Wasp. I was waiting to see which car would be getting its wheels driven off this summer - looks like it will be the Wasp. Perhaps the '49 will next year.
Mark0 -
KYB shocks fit the rear, #344045. These seem to be commonly available.0
