Source for 6V Coil, Points & Condenser
In a separate thread about a 49 Commodore that dies and will not re-start, it has been suggested by several individuals that I should try replacing the condenser and/or the coil. Does anyone know of a source for ignition components for the 49 8cyl engine? I am aware of the fact that Kanter sells 6V coils and also tune-up kits. Is this the best source, or are there others I am not aware of? Is this something that Bill A. sells?

I'm sure Bill Albright can help you. Dave Kostansek also sells many of those items; he's a regular advertiser in the WTN. Somewhere, someone gave the part number of a condensor you can buy at a parts store but you'll have to search the thread for that.0

6 volt coil can be had at autozone, as well as the points, and condensor. However, for the points and condensor, I would suggest our local hudson guru's listed above. The autozone stuff will get you going, and work well, but it isn't the same as old stock stuff...0

Stay away from new old stock coils as they have been sitting around too long & will soon fail on the road. Fresh new 6 volt coils are readily available from the local parts stores.---Cliff Minard.0

You know a condensor really does not care if it is 6 or 12 or 24 or 50 volt as long as it will not break down at the rated voltage. If it is for a 12 volt vehicle and it physically fits, there is no reason it will not work. It is only a capacitor.0

I got all electrical tune-up parts for my Hornet off the shelf at NAPA- I don't recall they even had to order anything.0

This question is going to seem rather uninformed! How do you get the part numbers or the specifications to obtain replacement Condenser and Points? I have a 1949 Commodore 8 - do you pop the distributor cao and take out the Condenser and Points and then try to match, or is there a part number reference somewhere? Responses ranged from using NAPA and Farm Stores to getting parts from Hudosn experts. I would assume you can't just go into a NAPA with the make and model on a old Hudson and expect to get the right replacement. I can guess that any 6V condenser that will fit would work, but the points would have to be correct - correct???

Actually, that's exactly what I did- Walked into NAPA, asked for tune-up kit for 1952 Hudson Hornet with 308 engine, just the same as if I had good sense. They've got a whole section on "vintage" applications, with all sorts of wierd and interesting stuff in it. The counter guys kind of like the change of pace- you can only work up so much excitement for yet another strut for yet another Honda. Look for an older guy, if possible- it shortens up the process a bit if your parts guy has at least heard of the car.0

For your 8 cylinder with IGT The old Echlin part numbers are CS13 for the points and AL868 for the condensor.

Brings up a point I made several threads back. MAKE FRIENDS WITH YOUR LOCAL REAL PARTS STORE, Like NAPA, Bumper to Bumper or the like where the people are real parts people, Not High schoolers. I work part time in a store and I have found all kinds of seals,Etc. Even found a set of front wheel grease seals for a 1920 Essex, All the brake parts for a stepdown, and so on.0 -
I did as suggested - made friends with an older Parts Guy at NAPA. I was able to obtain the condenser thanks to the information supplied by this thread - THANKS!.
I was able to source the condenser, the coil, rotor and distributor cap. Only thing I struck out on was the points. NAPA Parts Guy was able to cross reference everything else, but the book did nto show points for a 49 Hudson 8 - had 47s and 50s, but no 48s or 49s ( very strange but the points were not shown as available for those years ). I can call Bill A or other suggested sources for the points. Anyway the car is runnig excellently and has not died on several prolonged road trips.

Points from a 42 Nash will fit so see if he can cross ref that.0

Pertronix makes an electronic conversion kit for 6 or 12v Hudson's. Never have to worry about points and condensors again.0
