followup to the clutch question

I have a 46 Hudson super six coupe. I am trying to drain and refill the clutch. The manual says to turn the flywheel until the star is aligned with the timing pointer at the timing inspection hole. Where the heck are these things?? What is the timing inspection hole and where is it. I do see the flywheel behind the starter but that is it. Also it talks about a special socket wrench to remove plug and a J-485 gun to use to fill the clutch. Can anyone shed some light on how to drain and refill the clutch. Thanks again for all the previous great responses..... you guys are awesome with the help. JR new guy.

You'll find the timing inspection hole just slightly above and to the left of the starter (as you look within the engine compartment on the driver's side of the car, back toward the rear of the car).

You can make this process easier by unscrewing and removing the cap on the back of the solenoid, which covers the remote starter button. You can then press the button and watch the flywheel rotate. The stars are stamped into the flywheel so you may have to carefully wipe off the grease with a kerosine soaked rag.

When one of the two hex plugs rotates into view stop the flywheel. You just need a regular socket wrench (I forget the size). After you've loosened the plug carefully remove it with your fingers and try not to drop it down into the flywheel cover below. (If you do, you'll simply have to go under the car and remove two bolts to retrieve your plug.)

Then rotate the wheel until the next star shows up in the hole, and at this point the fill hole (now open, because you removed the plug) will deposit the liquid contents of the clutch onto your garage floor.

When it's emptied, rotate the hole back so it's visible through the opening. You do not need anything too special here, maybe a small funnel with a rubber tube thin enough to fit through the hole, into which you pour the Hudsonite. Or use a baby's enema syringe. Put in just the one bottle of Hudsonite. Then cap the hole and you're done!
