Which head? Iron or Aluminium? I believe the Al one had"H-145" on it while the iron head had "Powerdome" on it.0

the H 145 wass used on 51 heads only both aluminum and cast iron, the power dome was dropped after 50 BILL ALBRIGHT0

Bill, I've got a 53 Hornet block which has never been touched. It has an aluminium head with"H-145" on it and this matches the numbers on the door post as well. I've got a 51 Hornet with a 308 which says"Powerdome" on the head {part #309121}. My experience over the years with working on stepdowns is that Hudson can confuse even the best of us when it comes to hard and fast rules about when one item ended and another began. Lets face it, they were a company trying to make a profit selling well made products. Many times parts from last years model would appear on the first run of the new years models. I have found it easier to say"as a general rule..." when making a determination about when certain items appeared . There's too many times when Hudson will make you a liar if you don't!0

In my quest for knowledge of Hudson's and to put some of the details to my car back to stock as I repair them, I am trying to figure out what I am supposed to have for interior lights. From my wiring diagram I should have one on each side under the dash, one at the bottom of each b pillar controlled by the door switches and the overhead controlled by a manual switch on the unit itself. My overhead didn't work at all. I took the switch apart, cleaned the contacts and repaired the connector and it is working again. The drivers side under dash looks like a normal courtesy light, but it is too new and has some aftermarket wiring done to be correct. It only works off the drivers door switch. The passenger side has a turn signal unit like on a motorcycle that lights up when the passenger door is opened. I know that isn't correct. What is correct on a 54 Hornet 2 door?0

Hudzilla is right. My factory original 51 Hudson Hornet has a cast iron head on it and it has Powerdome on it. My buddies 52 has H-145 my other buddy has a 52 with powerdome on it. Could mean the dealer or previous owner replaced the head, but the early production 51's had powerdome on the 308 cast iron head.0

Sorry 46 your right for sure. That has happened to me a couple of times. I have clicked on new thread and when I submit it goes in the same place I was last looking. Not sure why, I guess it's a gift. There's a new thread now, sorry for the confusion.0

I agree with Bill ... the H-145 head was a '51 only item. Starting in '52 the heads had the cast-in "308." The name Powerdome goes way back into the thirties, but I can't say when it was dropped. I'd be very cautious about assuming an engine has "never been touched" unless you've owned the car since new.0

I just purchased a cast-in "308" iron head, # 309121, with "POWER DOME" read from driver's side, centered on 3rd bolt hole back from front.
This will probably be a close match to original to go on the 53 308 engine I'm rebuilding. Don't like/trust the H-145 AL head I removed from it, although its lightness is tempting!!
thanks for your feedback0 -
Yes that cast iron 308 Power Dome head will work fine on your 53 308 engine.0

Thanks; here's a great link to: Reprinted below is a chart from Jack Cliffords Hudson parts catalog showing the various 1951-1956 Hudson six cylinder engines with stats on each.
The table developed by Jack Clifford compares the various engine comos for both the AL and FE heads, including displacements, compression ratios, gross cam lift, valve sizes, cu in, bore, stroke, horsepower (202, 232, 262, 308, 308-7X) etc., for years '51-56

Park, I'd be very cautious about assuming anything as concrete about Hudsons. The engine block from my first 51 had an aluminium head with nothing on it. Not even "308"Subsequently Hudson issued aluminium heads with "H-145" on them .When did that start and end? Who knows with exact certainty.54 HSWH was wanting to know if "Powerdome " could be on the head of his 53 Hornet , to which I would say yes it's entirely possible. By the way ,I did know from my blocks that they unmolested with those heads as origional. All that proves though is that those blocks had those heads. It says nothing about whatever else Hudson did as running improvements or as management dictated.0

I checked my 52 Hornet today and the stock head reads both powerdome and 308

These 50+ year old Hudsons that never had a wrench on them are really something. I was working on them when they were new.0
