Type of Fuel you use in a 49 Hudson 8

I have been using Premium Fuel in my 1949 Hudson 8 and adding Lead Substitute. Is premium required, or would middle grade or even regular work as well. I would assume premium would reduce or eliminate the chance for pinging. Is pinging a problem with the 262 engine? What are you experts running?

I have never heard of using premium in a car of that era. I don't think you need it, and furthermore I don't think you need the lead substitute either, unless you tend to do a lot of driving at 80+ mph.

The compression ratio of these engines should only require regular. The lead additive or substitute is optional. I use it although it probably is not necessary, just cheap insurance.
  • I use different grades depending upon where I am going. Up into the mountains I use mid-range, down on the flatlands I use regular, and use a lead substitute every other tank. I don't know if it is really necessary but I feel more at ease doing it that way.

However at todays gas prices it is not going to be driven as much as it has been, anyway!

Well I Only Use Reg. Unleaded Now I Do Have New Hardened Seats And New Valves But See No Reason All Hudsons Of The Eara Should Use Any Thing But Reg.

You can use regular, and don't need lead substitute in any Hudson engine.

Recently a very experienced engine rebuilder told me that the material that my Hudson engine block was made from is a better and 'harder' material than in the so-called hardened valve seats pressed into the aluminum heads of today's modern cars.
  • THNAKS FOR THESE INPUTS! I guess I can start saving $ by using Regular Unleaded instead of Premium. I will save the expense of Premium or my Corvette. I will probably continue to use the Lead Substitute as i already have it in the trunk, but will consider going to adding every other tank. I don't want to stop driving the 49 as it gets lots of looks and all the old guys want to talk to me at each stop light and in the gas station. Even get some questions from the women, but not as frequently.

    THANKS!
