terraplane finally running after overhaul, but....

finally got the '35 straight 6 running. thanks to all here who answered questions! i had a bad carb (on the shelf too long) and a bad accelerator pump and i had 2 bad spark plugs. i still have an occasional back fire through the carb though. static timing exactly TDC set with meter, any thoughts???i don't have a dwell meter, but i will recheck the point gap to maint. manual setting tomorrow. heat riser set on summer. thanks. sincerely, tom

    Usually backfires are caused by either valves or crossed plug wires.

    Make sure the timeing sequence is 1-5-3-6-2-4

    If the car is ideling smothly and the back fire is upon higher revs or under load you might want to check the valves. If the motor has been sitting for a while (not a fresh rebuild) the intake valve stems might be gummed up with old fuel. This would cause them to either not close completly or be slow in closing.

    fresh rebuild, and the firing order is correct. car runs perfectly 99% of the time. it just shouldn't be back firing through the carb and when it does it is just one cylinder, just one time...then runs fine and later will back fire once or a very short series of backfires. always trough the carb. so sticky intake valve or weak intake valve spring??? valve springs are new (replaced during overhaul)thank you for the ideas, sincerely, tom

    I just noticed that it was freshly overhauled. My discussion of the valves is still true only the stem to guide clearence might be too small. Also Valve springs might be week or the cam timeing off. These are all possibilities. If you are in the HET club and want to give me a call we can go over this.     Hi.,--- You may want to check out the coil as they can do some funny things when not functioning properly, especially after they get hot.
