The H145 head is off of a 1951 308 engine. Do you have a 308 engine in your car? it is possible that some dropped a 308 in there. Any pictures of the engine? and the car?0

Hi Commodore,
Your head is for a 308 c.i. engine. The H145 indicates the horsepower of the standard 308. I believe this marking was only used in 1951. Later heads are marked by c.i. like
308, 362, 232. They are basically interchangeable. Placing a smaller c.i. head on a larger engine raises the compression, ie. 262 or 232 head on a 308.0 -
i have no pictures of it but it is a 1948 commodore 6. it was in a shop that overhauled the engine about 20 years back. my father puchased it. and i purchased it from my father. how do i determine the enginge block size that i do have in it? the head has H145 POWERDOME on the head. (not aluminum) what size of engine is suppose to be in the commodore 6? could this be a 262 with a h145 head on it or a 308 with a h145 head?0

The engine and head are most likely from a '51 Hornet, as the heads are not interchangeable with the '48-'50 narrow block engines. The Commodore 6 is supposed to be 262 c.i., and in '48 they had no size markings on the head.

Take a look at the engine serial number on the front passager side of the block. It will probably not match the cars serial number meaning someone replaced the 48 262 with a Hornet engine from 51. And there is nothing wrong with that.
Geoff is correct the 308 head will not fit on a 262 from 48 as the 51 308 is a wider engine.0 -
