I recently retrieved the original engine for my 54 Wasp (mostly red 262s, right?) from the 2nd owner of the car and who had it pulled out in 1959; it is numbers-matching, plus it's a 308, plus it is painted GOLD.
Apparently there are exceptions. The 308 block & crankshaft are in the vat now, and I plan to repaint it Universal Gold, as it was originally-placed in the car.0 -

Is it supposed to be gold?

When installing an engine into a customer vehicle... the engine color was usually returned to the same color as the removed engine. But, as my now deceased friend Bernie Rosen (Rosen Novak Hudson ... later Chevrolet) of Omaha Nebraska showed me... Hudson direction to dealers... paint the car whatever the customer wants to make the sale.
Without trying to influence your decision there will always be those who... KNOW... what Hudson did, unfortunately other than paper and recorded interviews... those events are 50+ years gone. Hope this will help you pick the color that suits your tastes.Good Luck
