Burning lots of oil

A fellow Hud owner with a 34 Tera is using oil like petrol. He is planning to buy some Egge pistons & rings to solve the problem. This is a very expensive purchase with conversion rates, freight, Gov tax.

The existing pistons are Aust made pistons which had only one oil ring and they also had less holes in the ring groove for oil return. He has been in touch with the piston maker and the replacement set isnt much better. He is also using a solid cast oil ring instead of the 3 piece oil ring.

I would have thought that there would have been a lot of other car makes that had similar engines to Hudson (splash fed, similar bore/stroke etc) who used only one oil ring successfully. We would appreaciate some comments.

Thanks.

Recommend your friend check with our club source, Dale Cooper, in Ohio, before making a final decision on a source for the pistons and rings. Dale has very high-quality pistons and rings (original style four-ring design, but without the "locating pins"). I just finished helping a fellow HET'er put new ones from Dale in his '34T engine.

You won't get the Australian pistons to work, unfortunately, and you can't go to CX3 or CR4 chrome rings, as these won't bed in and will damage the cylinder walls. And it is difficult and expensive to install softer sleeves. Park's suggestion of getting 4-ring pistons from Dale Cooper is the best way to go.

I have a set of NOS 3" Hudson pistons (.030 over) but I don't know if they will fit a '34. They were made by Toledo Steel Products and are in really fine shape but the documentation with them says that they need to be cam ground.

The same pistons were used from '34 thru '47 (6 cyl), and '32 - '52 (8 cyl), and will also fit the Jet. Make sure they have four ring grooves, 3 above the pin, and on below. The Australian pistons only have three grooves, and I have never heard of an engine rebuild using these pistons that did not scoff oil.
