Procedures to Remove/Install Valve Guides
Trying to do a valve job on my 38 Terraplane, Model 81, 6 cylinder coupe, and need to replace a valve guide. I have some NOS guides, but am not sure if they are intake or exhaust. According to the parts manual, there are separate part numbers for the intake and exhaust guides. Can you tell the difference by looking at them? Would I be better off ordering a "modern" day one sold by some of the club members rather than install one of the NOS ones?
How difficult is it to remove and replace a guide? How is it done, and can it be done with tools on hand or do I need something special? I could not find much in the Mechanical Procedures Manual.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Take a look at this previous thread it should answer all of your questions.

Thanks for the lead on the right thread. We generally followed what was discussed in the thread. We drove the old guide down with a 5/16 bolt with a brass washer under the head. Had to turn the tappet down to get the old guide out, but it worked well. Installed the new guide using the same bolt with the brass washer on the threaded end with a spacer above it and large washers under the bolt head. We stacked the washers, which were larger than the opening in the block to give us the 1 1/16" depth for the guide. Drove it in dry and it seemed to go in well. Guess we will see how good of a job we did when we get the car back on the road.
Thanks again for your assistance, and to all in the thread.0
