Question- What was the purpose of the relief between the valves and the cylinder on the top of a '55 and '56 308 block? Norm

  It is a common modification done to flathead engines to improve airflow from the valves to the cylinder.

  Horsepower!! Also helped with heat stress cracks. Imagine blowing through a coffee straw then through a regular one
