Engine Stands

What kind of engine stand are you using to work on your six cylinder engines. Most of the stands out there seem to be for V blocks. The six is a long engine so I am looking for a good option to mount my engines to work on.

I am looking at a 1250 Ib model that has two legs out in front. Seems to me to be less tippy.

  • Most of the stands work on straight 6 or 8's. The one I used on my 8 came from Eastwood, but I think it can be had cheaper elsewhere. Supports up to 1250#. Used it on two other straight 8's, no problem. $199

I have two of the 2000lb stands and one of the 1250 stands. I definately like the 2000lb stands better. I also believe they are the same as the Harbor Freight type. I didn't give more than $100.00 for any of them.

If you are going to leave a heavy engine on one of these dual leg stands for an extended time, use some wooden blocks across the legs and a bottle jack to hold up the front of the engine.

Ed Moore (of Bellingham Motors in Massachusetts) at one time had many engine stands built specifically to hold the Hudson postwar six-cylinder engines. (They might actually have been factory-built, but I'm not sure.) He has since sold most of these off but he still might have one or two for sale. E-mail him at XXXessex33@comcast.net (delete the XXX before sending).
