Overdrive comparison

My '51 Kaiser parts car has an overdrive tranny on it. I was wondering since Hudson and Kaiser both used GM hydramatic transmissions if they used similar overdrive transmissions or one developed by the same manufacturer.

Yes, Borg-Warner made the overdrives for all the independents (Kaiser, Studebaker, Hudson, etc.) as well as some of the 'majors' as well, I believe. However, inasmuch as the overdrive innards and housings are adapted to fit particular transmissions, one cannot simply remove the overdrive from a Kaiser transmission and bolt it to a Hudson transmission, for example.

The innards of all Borg-Warner overdrives are interchangeable, as far as the actual overdrive parts are concerned. The differences are in the adapter plates, input, and output shafts, which are tailored to the individual makes. I overhauled my Hudson Jet overdrive by cannibalising the innards from a Wolesely 6/110 unit. Luckily the input and output shafts were okay.

Some years ago I bought a new plannetary gear for my 49 overdrive from the Phord dealer. Was for a 62ish Fairlane. Same gear made on the same machine.
