Need new starter

Well, I got around to taking the starter apart to look it over on my 50 Pacemaker project and found some bad news. The armature is worn so much by the brushes that it is smooth. I tried to get it to run with a 6V battery and it would try to spin, but not quite make it. I suspect it will have to be completely replaced. The gear assembly on the bendix drive does not look so great either. Where should I look for a replacement and should I have it converted to 12 volts while I am at it? The starter is for a standard transmission with overdrive. I took a automatic transmission starter apart that I have and discovered that it only had two coils rather than 4, what gives there?

Alexa, take your starter to a place that repairs starters/generators. They will be listed in the yellow pages. They may be able to repair yours or find you one that will work.
  • I have a starter, auto lite mch6306 which I had a shop use the shroud and put on another starter so I have a useable spare. This starter has a broken shroud, but the body and innards is good, or so the person who sold it to me said. It is actually a Chrysler starter from what I believe were used for their flat-head sixes from 1948 thru 1956. This you, or anyone who needs one, can have for free! Just a little problem, it weighs about 30 lbs. So it would have to be picked up or other arrangements made. I live in Canada about 50 miles from Buffalo. If interested e-mail me at hetjeblakeley@globalserve.net (remove the het)
