1951 Hornet Convert finally home!

Hi guys,

Just thought I'd put a couple of photos up on the site of the 1951 Hornet Convert that I bought from Bill Albright. Bill was, as usual, the easiest to deal with and was a great help in getting the car loaded and on it's way. He described the car but it's in better shape that his description. There is absolutely no rust anywhere other than surface rust, the frames are as solid as a California car should be.

The car was parked in 1972 but somewhere in it's history somebody put an Olds engine in it. I can't see where the frame has been modified so it's a really clean installation. My guess is that it's a mid 50's engine by the looks of the air cleaner and the "Rocket" valve covers.

No, it's not for sale anymore. I got asked that question wherever I stopped on the way back home.

    .

our Hudson had the same swap done back in the 50s.

it was a hydra-matic car to begin with,so the swap consists of cutting the original engine mounts off the frame and drilling the front crossmember for the Olds mount.

the exhaust manifolds were also modified, with the left side running UNDER the frame with rippled tubing.

the firewall brace was also cut (i would hate to see that done to a convertible) to clear the distributor cap.
  • and BTW that's a hell of a nice car you got there too!
  • Oh my!!! What a nice car. I'm sure you don't want my opinion, but I'm giving it anyway. I'd wash that thing up inside and out and get it driving. I might spot paint a few crusty places, but I wouldn't restore it. I'd appreciate it like it is and watch it appreciate in value.

    Have fun

    Steve
  • Thanks for the kind words guys. Steve, I'm going to do just that. First is a complete brake job and getting the drivetrain operational. The paint's pretty checked in some places, so spotting it in is probably out but I'm going to enjoy the car and just drive it. I've got a half way decent set of '52 grille bars that I'll probably put in it but that's it for this season. Since the top's bad, I'll just drive it down! Nobody'd know the difference anyway...
  • lLARRY, GLAD YOU ARE ANOTHER HAPPY HUDSON BUYER. ENJOY IT AND TELL EM WHERE YOU GOT IT. WE HAVE MORE, BUT CARS LIKE THAT COME UP ONCE IN A LIFETIME. BY THE WAY, I WAS ASSURED THAT THE ENGINE IS A 55 OLDS, BILL ALBRIGHT HERE AT VINTAGE COACH
