Jet turn signal / lights

Trying to troubleshoot some electrical problems on my 54 Super Jet. The brake lights and taillights don't work so I can't take it out on the road legally until I get that at least the brake lights working. Headlights do work.

First, anyone know why the electrical diagram in my shop manual would not have the turn signal in it?

I tested the switch on the master cylinder and that's good. Circuit breaker seems okay. One wire from the brake switch goes to the circuit breaker, the other goes up the steering column to the turn signal so I think the problem might be in there. Can someone tell me how to take the horn ring off? I'm going to try pushing it in and turning it but wanted to doublecheck. If I need to get the wheel off do I need a special tool? I guess I'll find out...

Thanks!

Carl

  • Got the horn ring off, seems like a puller will work to remove the wheel. As far as I can tell the turn signal sends brake signal to both taillights if a direction is not chosen. The wires out of there have no juice so I guess that's the problem. Weird that it isn't in the electrical diagram.

They all work pretty much the same. I assume you have one bulb in each light, and that the bright filament is used for both the brakes, and the t.s. Do you have an electrical tester so you can troubleshoot? You should have about 6 wires going to the switch.

One with 6 volts (probably from the ignition switch since your signals only work when car is 'on'.

One from the brake lights (supplying power for when brakes are on)

One going to front right signal light

One going to front left signal light

One going to rear right signal light

One going to rear left signal light

So, check the two incoming power circuits first to make sure they're supplying power. Then, all the outgoing (to the lights) circuits, after you turn the switch.

And of course you would want to check the blinker itself!

And look carefully to see if the wires are all attached and nothing is shorting out.

The 1953-54 Mechanical Procedures Manual supplement has ther witring diagram for the Jet, but it is pretty indecipherable. Basically, the turn signal switch directs the brake light power to both sides when "off", and switches the contact to the blinker when "on" either way.

  • I think the circuit breaker may have a problem after all. Even though both sides of the breaker show good voltage, a test light bulb will light up when connected to the battery side of the breaker, but not to the other side. It's like any sort of load across the breaker makes it trip (or fail). Anyone seen this sort of problem?

Methinks you have a short somewhere which is causing the circuit breaker to open. Disconnect the output wire, and then connect a wire with a light bulb in series, ground it and see if you get a light. If so, you have to find the short. If not, the breaker is a dud.
