Vibration dampener loose

A fellow in our chapter noticed (last fall) that the fan had about 1/2" of movement in it. In other words the belt was moving the vibration dampener. This means that the dampener is rotating on the shaft (I assume). He tightened it but this spring it had gotten loose again. Again, he tightened the bolt, and drove to a meet (in March). Afterwards the dampener bolt had come loose again.

Anyone have any ideas of what's happening and how to fix it?

  • I would check the threads on the bolt to see if they are stripped. If so replace the bolt and chase the thread of the shaft with a tap to clean them out then retighten and make sure to torque to proper spec.
  • What is the Vibration Damper? When I start my car I am getting a Metal sounding thunk..Almost sounds like the fan might be hitting the radiator? Iks metal on metal and goes away after the car has been started
  • The vibration damper is a metal disk that is bolted to the end of the crankshaft and has a pulley on it that the fan belt runs from the water pump to it and runs the water pump. The damper does exactly what its name implies it dampens vibration from the rotating crankshaft. You can tell if something is wrong as your engine with run roughly and you will have a noticeable vibration in the drive train.

    Hello Wise Sage,

There should be a small lock type clip that locks the bolt. You torque the bolt to specs and then bend up the clip to prevent the bolt from moving. Either his lock is missing, or he's not torqueing to specs or both.
  • HUDSON USED A LOCK WASHER WITH FOLD OVER TABS. THESE ARE HARD TO FIND AS THE TABS BREAK OFF AFTER SEVERAL FOLD OVERS. iF YOU CAN FIND ONE IT WORKS. ALSO USE LOCKTITE ON THREADS. GOOD LUCK, BILL ALBRIGHT

Does anyone have one of these lock washers? Does anyone know if they were used by other makes of cars? Thanks for your helpful suggestions.
  • if it has been run loose, and you can turn it back and forth on the crank, there is a problem with the woodruf key or the keyway, or both. I experienced a similar problem, and had to have the crank welded and a new keyway cut in it.
  • Any good Nut and Bolt fastener company will have in stock or can order the tab type lock washer that Bill A speaks of in his post. This type of tab lock is the original method used to assure the snout bolt stays tight and in place.

Fastenal and Nut&Bolt are the two companies I use locally... Tractor supply is potentailly a source.

Please forgive my woeful ignorance (this shows how long it's been since I've been into the engine) but is the "tab lock washer" made in such a way that part of it engages a hole in the dampener itself? Else why bother to have tabs that bend around the bolt? That would only mean that when the bolt starts to loosen, so does the washer, unless that washer also grabs the dampener.

    Jon,

You are right. The tab washer not only has several (4, I think) large tabs around the outside, of which you'd bend up a couple when locking the bolt down, but there is also a small tab going into the keyslot on the crankshaft. When I recently rebuilt my big six motor, I was lucky to have an original that appeared to have never been bent up at all. I believe it was an unmolested '49 motor, and after cleaning the surface rust off, the tab was like new.

On a rebuild engine we did last year. When we first started to run the engine the fan turned slow. Noticed the the balancer actually seperated in itself from its inner hub. Never saw that before on a hudson balancer.

The 1937 shop manual, mentions that the dampener consists of a hub and a flywheel which are connected by two rubber discs. It says that should the discs deteriorate they need to be replaced. Do you suppose your discs need replacement?

For those who have not seen these washers... the following depiction will show you what should be behind the nut used to hold the Hudson harmonic balancers on to the crank.

Today I spoke to John H. The lock washer was on the bolt but wasn't properly bent over. He has re-tightened it and bent over the lock washer tabs. If this fails, I suggested Lok-Tihght
