51 Hornet Coupe, strong #3 Car Value?

I've been offered a nice 51 Hornet coupe. I've gotten a couple pictures in the mail. It was restored 10 years ago and from what I've been told by a Hudsonite third party, it is excellent underneath and mechanically. Twin-H with dual range Hydro. Not matching number engine but correct 308. Chrome is excellent and paint could be redone in order to make it show. Interior is in good to great shape. I haven't seen the car yet but will soon. Assuming everything I've been told is validated upon inspection, what would you guys estimate in value? I have my own ideas, but would like a few opinions. Niels

I think that the because it's the first year of the hornet and the fact that it's a coupe with all the goodies there is strong demand. It sounds more like a low #2 . However a strong #3 18,000 to 20,000 and Low #2 23,000 25,000. Of coarse it's hard to tell without seeing but the mkt is strong for Hornet coupe's. Good luck

Strong three in my opinion is $15-17,000
  • Hey guys, Hudson rookie here. What does the #2 or #3 classification mean? Is it a way of rating a car into a group to quantify some sort of dollar value? One more question, I just bought a '51 Hornet 4 door (so I'm now selling my '52 Wasp) that is numbers matching, has a rebuilt engine and tranny which has not run yet (rebuilt in '76, when it was garaged under a car cover and not pulled out until now - the guy lost time & interest), and the original untouched '51 interior is nearly flawless. A long time ago the owner put a single carb setup in it to increase fuel efficiency. He kept the twin H setup, but the carbs and cleaners were stolen. He did give me the manifold though. There's honestly no rust on the car. All it needs is a couple dents removed, some grill work, and paint. I don't know if I want to tell you guys how much I bought this car for 'cause you might faint. How much would you estimate the value to be? I'll try to post pictures later but don't have them on the computer.

I agree No way in heck I'd pay $20K plus for a car that wasn't #1-#2 Because #3 is a driver in my book and looks perfect only from 20 ft away. Never get into the car because of the money...you're going to put money into it regardless. As has often been said it's worth whatever someone is illing to pay for it. So real question is....is it a good deal to you?
  • I think the 8,000 to 9,000 was referring to my 4 door not the coupe, unless I misunderstood it. Sorry for the confusion.

I would also say 15 to 19 ish for a NICE, strong # 3 car. You can't find them. All you see forsale are project cars or # 1 or # 2 cars and these are still far and few between. There is never a shortage of bidders on these coupes or even for a very nice sedan. I'm probably going to look at it on Thursday. The purchase depends on condition as I believe I already know what I can buy it for. People can and do make money reselling cars. I have done so many times, not everytime but most. Obviously, you have to buy it right. ANY Hornet coupe is getting snapped up immediately and as we all know the movie "Cars" will be out shortly and it certainly will positively affect values. It won't just be the movie. Now there are Hot Wheel cars and cereal boxes with Hudson's in 'em and the movie isn't even out. I would venture a guess and speculate that values go up 20% or more immediately after the movie comes out. A better gamble and odds than the stock market I think.
  • I'd go to www.nada.com that would give you a good idea of the "ballpark".
  • Thanks, I have looked at that and the old car price guide. As a "guide" they can give you a ballpark but they seem to trail the current market.
  • 10,000 to 14,000 depending on how close to a "real" 2 it might be.

I don't think that being a 51 hornet adds value to it. More desireable probably are the 52 and 53 coupes. but coupes are hot.

That seems low but then again as you correctly stated, it depends on how it is rated and condition. I can vouch for the fact that a Strong # 4 car will get $6,000, 7000 or more everyday of the week as I have personally been involved as a potential buyer with six different cars that sold in the last 4 months.

My 53 4dr appraised at 17500 about 6 weeks ago. It's original in a daily drivable high #3/low #2 condition, if that helps.

I agree, that is the market as it sold and had 38 bids on it. That was indeed a very NICE original car. Strong money but I think it was worth it. Try to find and buy another unrestored Hudson in that condition. To think of how it must have been pampered all these years and to stay in such nice condition. What a rarity and pretty amazing. Looks like it was bought by a dealer.

I agree plus it needs some work and it's a Sedan.
