Caught on Photo Radar?

Thought I would pass this on as its quite funny I think.

A couple days ago I received a "Photo Radar Citation" from the gratious City of Scottsdale, AZ! The ticket is written on my 1950 Pacemaker Coupe for traveling at 76mph on the Loop 101 freeway where the posted speed limit is 65mph (here photo radar only trips at 11mph over posted speed).

Of course, as many of you may know, my Pace has not run at any speed past "push" in over 11 years. The car in the photo is a BMW 3.0 (batwing) which looks nothing like my car! And I don't have enough friends to push my Pace up to 76mph! The problem arose because the last digit on the license plate in the photo was misread by the traffic folks to read a "2" when its actually a "7." My plate has the "2."

The sad part is, I must go to court to prove this isn't my car since I cannot identify the driver in the photo. So I either pay the $157 fine, or waste a day in traffic court proving its not my car.

I hate these photo radar machines!

(I would post a pic of the ticket, but again I'm having trouble "cutting and pasting" the pic into a new thread)

  • I know what you mean Jay, The city of Knoxville TN just installed 10 of those

RED LIGHT Guardians. No speed readers yet but they have sent out over a thousand warnings for running red lights, including 2 school buses, 1 garbage truck AND............1 police cruiser! LOL

Starting next week there will be no more WARNINGS, only tickets. We will see how that works out. So if you are in Knoxville at a red light, smile you could be on candid camera! I avoid the city anytime I can but sometimes it is just unavoidable.......

I think the best speed trap I've ever heard of was in Brockton, MA. One of the city cops lived on a fairly long straight residential street that was notorious for speeders. City had tried just about everything they could think of, short of speed bumps, to get cars to slow down. This cop proposed that he sit in his front yard with a radio and a radar gun, looking like Mr. Average enjoying the sun with a few "beers". They put cruisers at each end of the street - and in one hour bagged 31 speeders!!! Before the day was out it almost seemed like they had nailed half the city. Kept everybody slowed down for about a week, anyway. LOL ROF

  • Amusing to say the least. Here in Littlestown Pa. we are 1.5 miles from the Md. line. Speed goes from 50mph to 25mph in that 1.5 miles with 5 speed limit signs in between. Town cops DO NOT STOP anyone unless they are going at least 40mph in a 25mph zone. They get plenty who always say they were only going 27 mph, yea, Over the posted speed limit. Don't drive over limit and stop at stop lights and you don't get stopped. Very simple.

There is a clear spray available in spray can that you spray the rear license plate with and it is invisible to the naked eye but causes those cameras to be unable to read your license plate. It was tested in one of the leading car magazines (I think Car & Driver) a year or so ago and does work.

Something wacky!!! How about really deep tunneling your license plate OR vertical slats 2" deep but thin OR make a nice long shroud over it like a rear sunvisor. It could be seen from the rear by a cop car so it wouldn't be illegal but not from an angle. Just thinking WAY out of the box as long as I stay out of the box (jail).

Well, back to my fantasy world of making Art.
  • We have had intersection cameras for awhile here, but these are the first radar cameras installed on a "freeway." At first the State said a city couldn't write tickets on a freeway because that was "State" territory, but apparently they changed their minds.

Try calling the city attorney and explaining the situation- You can often do a contested hearing on affidavits or sworn statements (its not like the camera is going to be there for you to cross examine), and the city attorney will probably just kick it before the hearing anyhow- they don't like to waste time (or be embarassed) any more than you do.
