Water Pump woo's, my first Hud

Hey guys and gals, I bought the 52 Wasp/262 strait 6 and now I guess the fun begins! The first thing I want to do is repair the water pump gasket which is leaking pretty much like are weather right now. Has anybody on here ever replaced the gasket? If so what did you use for gasket material?cork? Also does anybody know the correct thickness for the gasket. Also will I run into any surprises that I should know about once I start to take the pump off the block?

I also wanted to tell you guys that I'am so excited to finally own a Hudson I have always loved the looks of these cars and cant wait to see her zoom down the road! The cars seems to be in decent shape, I had the radio working the other day and even the interior light seem to be working, Im really impressed you just dont see these things still working after 50 plus years. I also want to thank everyone on this awesome site for steering me in the right direction for purchasing this car. I knew exactly what to look for and that would not have been possible if it wasnt for all of you!!

Thank you,

Brent

Brent, you might want to try Dave Kostansek; he sells rebuilt pumps and I'd be surprised if he didn't have a water pump gasket or two on hand! Phone him at (440) 293-4079 before 8 PM. (For the cost of the postage, you might as well buy 2 or 3 gaskets...and you never know when you might need a spare, anyway!
  • I dont really think the pump needs to be replaced just the gasket. I do have some cork sitting here I also have a gasket making kit aswell and there is that tube stuff. When ever it stops raining I will pull it off but thought I post to get a heads-up before I do battle with the pump. Thanks for the contact info on the water pump though Im sure it will come in handy

  • I have made my own gaskets for water pumps. There are two gaskets, one between punp body and spacer plate, the other between spacer plate and block. I used gasket material between .015 to .020 thick. I also flat sanded all mating surfaces , pump body and both sides of spacer plate. If the wife is not looking you can tape a sheet of sand paper to formica counter for a flat surface, I used 120 grit. Hudsonly Lou Cote

Dave K very well may have the gaskets. regardless he is great source of parts. Amongst other things he stocks tune up parts, rebuilds fuel and water pumps, builds plug wires and battery cables. Dale Cooper is a definite source for your gasket needs. Dale stocks engine rebuild components. He's on the web: http://www.hudsonmotorcarco.com/
  • I have very rarely if ever seen just the gasket leak, It is proablly the pump itself, especially if sitting for any length of time. I stock fresh rebuilt pumps at 70.00 exchange If you are on the west coast, If not try Dave K. good luck, bill ALBRIGHTS VINTAGE COACH 16593 ARROW BL, FONTANA, CA 92335

    Brent ...

    We feel the excitement!!!

Being one of the old fellows... I can tell you that the excitement is a lifelong love and hate relationship that is almost like marriage. The Hudson affliction is a disease without cure... making your life more palatable required you make the effort to find out how to avoid the trials and tribulations your Hudson will bring to your everyday life... this BBS is obviously a wonderful place to find solace and support. There are other places... like my web site... see the URL below... and others you will find there. If you take the time to travel all the trails... some are duds ...the owners of the links have moved and left my page without a forwarding address (written excuse for my laziness). All kidding aside look at the site... there is information on how to make your own gaskets ... where it makes sense and information that will help you as you uncover the secrets and the ills of Hudson ownership.

Welcome once again... Hudsonin ... is a fun and life long addiction...

Cheers from the Heart Of Texas
