What is the general consensus on using a bypass filter on the Hudson splasher 6 and 8's?

Dan I for one don't use them we change our oil at 1,000 or less and the oil we use to day is far better than what was sold in the 40'and 50's

Now why I don't like the oil filter with the lines running on the out side of the engine if one brakes or even cracks it's SO LONG TO THE ENGINE I HAVE SEEN IT QUITE A FEW TIMES good luck

The splasher engines run on 3 pounds pressure to the gauge. You are not going to get a heck of a lot of oil through any filter at that. You could put a filter in line, but you can only filter half the oil this way, unless you fit two filters, one in each line. I agree with Paul they are un-necessary on a Splash fed engine.

    Geoff.
  • This is not an argument, but I hope to prompt more discussion on the subject. Was a Fram cannister filter an option on stepdowns? It seems that most pix I've seen of 8s have filter. Both of my engines have filters, but the installation does not look "factory". Thanks for your comments.

Well, I've had a couple of splasher 6s with the Fram mounted on the right edge of the firewall where it would make sense to mount the one for the pre-stepdown 8.

I just had an 8 in my Hornet for 2 years and it's hard enough what with the distributor and oil pump down under the coil, wires manifolds and cowl brace let alone putting a filter in there.

The big 6 of course had one planned above and ahead of the starter, where I have one on the Commadrore for looks, but it's not hooked up for the previous post reasons.

Now, Geoff would really have a problem with filtering stepdown 8s, as his stering mechanism and shift cable is also in the way.
